Krafty - he is not going to answer because he is one of those guys who thinks that he knows something but continuously provides no empirical information or data that backs up his assertions.

The statistics that exist do not resemble anything exhaustive in any way. However, I have mentioned more stats than you have. I stated that despite two all stars they are top 10 in points allowed. You have not given a single statistic. Volume of statistics when most of the relevant statistics don't exist isn't all that useful, but for a guy demanding them you seem to be pretty lacking.

Yea - and your issue is that you are not weighting them against their schedule. So you can sit there and tell me whatever it is that you are trying to get at but playing Miami, Buffalo and New York six times a year helps New England's defensive stats considerably each and every year since 2000.

And, if you knew anything about how many times this discussion has been had at ESPN over the last decade, regarding New England's divisional opponents in comparison to other AFC divisions then you would have known that.

Our division opponents look worse every year because they get dominated by us. When looking at out of division records, the AFC East is consistently better than they are given credit for.

This year, how good is the AfC East? Where does it rank?

I agree Draw - from a personnel perspective, they are not 18th or wherever they were. I would rank them at 13 and I do think that the Eagles have a better defense than the Patriots as well as the Bills, even though you wouldn't know it because of their offensive issues this year.

I think the Bills have an incredible defensive line, but I'd take our 'backers and our secondary over theirs. I think the Pats have more talent on defense than the Bills do overall. As for the Eagles, well, I really have no idea what to make of them. They're doing fine, but their division is pitiful and they've been inconsistent. I'm not saying their defense stinks, I'm just literally saying I don't know how to assess them.

A middle of the pack division is an astonishingly easy schedule for us?

Dude, if it wasn't for New England, the AFC East is the worst division in the NFL including behind the NFC East.

Any division looks bad with their best team removed.

See - and that is where you are just wrong.

I would take any division with the possible exception of the AFC South because of Houston and their performance this year over the AFC East when you take out the top team of its division.

I don't think getting hung up on NFL stats is really a good way to assess the talent of a Defense because there are too many variables that the NFL mainstream sites don't take into consideration. A better way IMO is DVOA(Defense-adjusted Value Over Average). Football Outsiders takes into account several values and comes up with a pretty good list of who the top defenses really are. Based on their stats, The Seahawks are #1 overall and the Pats are 19th.

My intuition tells me the Patriots have been average at best at drafting impact players.
I'd love for someone to calculate the total value points each year for each team to see if that is a possible partial explanation. History tells us the Patriots shouldn't bother wasting picks on DB's and WR's. If you removed their lack of success in those 2 areas, the Patriots would be looking a lot better right now.

i think you guys had one too many sips on the alcoholic eggnog over christmas this d healthy is top 5 in the league. it was being proven right to our faces to start the season! talib was mvp canadit shutting down aj green, julio jones, vincent jackson, jimmy graham and dennard the best #2 cb in the league was beasting fools too! then talib hurt his ckicken hip and dennard ankle and knee. we lose all our dt's inside and mayo..comeon. the defense is elite the stats dont tell the story after all the injuries. we need a stud strong safety, de opposite jones, and a dt even if armstead is a go next year. dont need much. the reason seattle is better is cuz they play more aggressive and blitz, until patricia is upgraded we wont reach the top. but we are not far off.

The starting D is pretty good but its depth is paper thin. One of the greatest things about the championship teams was depth. But a majority of the big names on those teams were not drafted by Bill

Exactly this. The 'depth' that is crap right now isn't our second string. It's our third and fourth string. Our second stringers - Collins, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Chris Jones - have actually been pretty good, not what you'd expect from an NFL starter but they're *not* that yet.
