Coach Chuck Pagano said that newly acquired Trent Richardson will play in Sunday's game at San Francisco.

When asked how much Richardson will play in Week 3, Pagano said, "As much as he can handle." The Colts didn't give up a first-round pick to let Richardson idle behind Ahmad Bradshaw. The playbook at the running back position is among the easiest to pick up, meaning T-Rich could see the majority of early-down work right away. He does have a brutal matchup, but he's still on the flex radar. "This guy is a rolling ball of butcher knives," Pagano said of Richardson. "He fits our scheme to a T."

LaMichael James (knee) returned to 49ers practice Thursday.

It puts James on track for Sunday, but it's not outside the realm of possibility he ends up a healthy scratch. James is currently without a role in San Francisco.

Vernon Davis - TE - 49ers

Vernon Davis (hamstring) remained out of 49ers practice Thursday.

Davis has insisted there's "no need to worry" about his Week 3 status, but it will be a concern if he doesn't get in at least a limited session on Friday. For now, take Davis at his word and keep him locked in as your TE1.

James may be our second-fastest skill position player behind Vernon. We may have to find ways to get him on the field just to open things up. I know he didn't show all that well in the pre-season, but he did alright at the end of last season - minus the SB fumble - and could have some use as a second back in formations with Gore or Hunter also on the field. As thin as our WR corps looks right now, we need to try something to get more playmakers involved.

Agreed. That seems to be one of our greatest needs: speed. That kid for Cinc vs Steelers sure made a difference. Zoom! And we never even tried to get outside against Seattle.
