This was perhaps my favorite part of the press conference.
“Walton could have been involved in sports ownership long ago. He certainly could have seen where the NFL was going and chosen to become involved in a skyrocketing business. He could have bought the Carolina Panthers when they were put up for sale in 2018. He was never interested.
“So, why now?
“As it turns out, the Broncos were the only team, Walton said, he and his family were ever interested in owning. Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner live in Colorado, and Walton said he spends ample time in the state. They have long been aware of the Broncos’ presence in the region. The group would not be shelling out $4.65 billion if it didn’t see the opportunity to operate a profitable business, but the desire not just to join the NFL but to do it in Denver came across clearly as all three new owners spoke Tuesday.
“This is a responsibility and a privilege,” Penner said. “The Broncos are an iconic franchise that means a lot to Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region. … We know our fans’ expectations are high, and we embrace that. We’re really anxious to get started. We want to compete and we want to win. We couldn’t be any more excited to get back to Denver and get started.”
