I always hated Russell and the Celtics. Wilt was my favorite player at that time. But results speak for themselves. Bill was not even in the same league as Wilt in terms of physical talent, but as the highly esteemed Bobby Knight once observed: "mental is to physical as 4 is to 1."

I am still convinced Russell may well have been the smartest man ever to suit up. At least in terms of basketball IQ.

Russell is often referred to as the first "point center" and I believe there is some validity to that. He did a lot of things that are pretty ordinary now, but were new to the game as he employed them. Simple things like blocking shots towards his teammates instead of out of bounds. The way he climbed Wilt like a tree to deflect his shots. And so on. These were all innovations at the time.

Tell me, can you name a more successful player coach than Russell?
