Strange for a rookie especially since he was a 1st rounder. Not a great start but at this point I wouldn’t put too much into it

Yeah, I file this under - not really a big deal. Yes, you'd love to have him out there, but I do get it. As long as they can get the contract finalized sooner than later, this really shouldn't be an issue.

I thought Rookie contracts were pretty much set based on where you are drafted. What exactly is there to negotiate?

There is general slotting, but still plenty of room to negotiate, and it's usually just QB's picked high who often try to hold out for more money than people picked above them because they think they're worth more.

Yep. Stewart said, Bengals offered him under last year's slot, and that is a reason why he wasn't willing to participate even with the injury waiver. I get it. Both sides want to get something fair (in their minds) but sometimes it takes a few weeks to hammer it out, even with the slotting system.

As long as this doesn't become a long-term issue, I'd say this isn't really a big deal.

The big issue is an organization that is offering money lower than last year’s slot.

Hendrickson and Cincy still can't come to a deal?
Nope. Going to play out into camp. Expected, honestly. Bengals can't focus on multiple things and currently are focused in other areas.

Bottom line - Bengals have no problem waiting Trey out. He's going to turn 31 this year. They can still tag him next year, and trade him for something. So, they can wait out and see if someone is willing to meet their price (Guessing 1st/3rd) or see if he plays for them this year (and potentially work out a deal) or they'll simply let him sit this year, he'll turn 32 next year - and risk losing more money.

Only way Trey can gain any real leverage isn't to threaten to sit out, but threaten to retire. If he retires, then the Bengals not only lose him this year, but lose any chance of getting compensation when he leaves (either by trade or by comp pick). Doesn't seem like that is a hardline stance he's willing to take (at least yet)...so, Bengals hold the cards.

Honestly - they should just sign him, but it's the Bengals.

Or he shows up but makes it painfully obvious he's not trying very hard.

I mean - that's certainly possible...but putting up shit numbers at 31 isn't exactly a great way to get your next contract and get paid what you think you are worth...

Of course, but if he wants to force the Bengals to give him a new contract , trade him or release him this seems like the only option for him.

I think folks need to understand what a Zac Taylor minicamp practice really is..... Most of us will get a better workout mowing our lawns. At the Zac Taylor offseason country club, the players are treated to a vigorous stretch, followed by a low-key walk through. They then cancel the last day of practice due to all the hard work. The players barely work up enough of a thirst to have to pay their own money for the gatorade available at the facility. They also don't work up much of an appetite which is good since the club doesn't provide meals.

So, Stewart really isn't missing much. But congrats to the Bengals for winning another negotiation. Only the Bengals could have a situation where they have Joe Burrow as QB and still make the fanbase miserable. It's real talent.
