Happy for Porcello, and he deserved to win a close CYA award ... but the fact that two writers left Verlander off their ballots completely is a real head-scratcher. He was clearly one of the Top 5 pitchers in the AL, by any measures you use. One of the two writers put Sale (3.34 ERA, similar W-L record to JV) and Tanaka (3 fewer starts, only 165 Ks) on his ballot instead of JV. Gimme a break.

At one time we had Verlander, Schrezer, Price, Porcello and ERA Champion Sanchez ... and we couldn't win it. A change sometimes isn't bad. Congrats to Porcello!!

Yes, Porcello got a ton more run support than JV. Both pitchers had 26 quality starts -- most in the AL. The biggest thing in Porcello's favor, IMO, was he was more consistent throughout the entire season. JV struggled into early May, and still had an ERA above 4.00 at the All-Star Break. His 1.96 ERA after the Break really made the whole season look good.

1. Put pressure on O'Korn
2. No turnovers
3. Man on man Peppers when he is on offense
4. Hope for the dougplayer jinks to work

(also, he had a 112 OPS+ last year. 133 PA is a SSS obviously. But I don't even think you could get that number if you combined his OPS+ figures from 2010-15.)
