Kluber and Verlander had identical GS, IP, and ERA in August. Verlander had a better WHIP, Kluber had an extra strikeout.

I suppose the main difference that whoever choses pitcher of the month saw was Verlander was 3-1, Kluber was 5-0. I agree with you that their win/loss records were largely a function of the teams' offensive output during their starts.

The Indians scored 24% more runs than the Tigers did in August.

I know you're being sarcastic, but.... if JV had any competition, it was Matt Boyd. Boyd had a damn good August. 3-0, 2.79 ERA, 23 K in 29 IP.

Now you are confusing me doug. Are you now agreeing that pitcher's wins are largely a team stat? You use to get pissed when someone discounted the number of wins a Tiger pitcher had. A pitcher can put his team in a good position for a personal 'W', but it requires his team's offense and defense to actually gain the win. Thus - a ''team'' stat. A poor way to judge pitching performance. Actually your ''sharpness'' might be just as worthy to use to judge a pitching performance.

So pitcher's win totals are important? OK. So, doug. Who is your choice for AL Cy Young winner? Porcello....he should have 20+ wins. Or Happ? He could get close to 20. Both have some distance over Verlander's 14. AND their ERA's are about the same.

Sometimes guys like Kluber and Verlander come up just a little short. Sort of like Jim Harbaugh at a MSU vs UM game. They're good...but can't seal the deal.
