There is no good way to definitively measure the defensive abilities of players from the twenties. None.

Then there's no good way to definitively measure a player's "abilities" from any time period, ever. Barry Bonds hit 762 home runs. What if his ability was to hit 765 home runs? Or, are you talking about value? Because that can't be "definitively" measured either.

OMAR - serious question concerning fielding stats. Below is a glove similar to the one worn by Detroit 2B Charley Gehringer in the 1930s. Gehringer was considered an above average fielder in his day. I was just wondering how you could compare fielding from that period, with the fielding of an infielder today? You might even want to consider the affect of wearing a wool uniform might have had on fielders in the 30s - on a warm humid day. (No argument - just curious about your thoughts. @Omar 382
