Pirates up 4-1 after four innings and they've knocked Jason Hammel out of the game already. If they can hold the lead, Lester might be pitching for the Cubs' playoff life in the nightcap.

They are a one trick pony - great pitching.

That's a helluva pony, though.

We've all seen what their offense has done since the trade deadline. They only need to be hot for about a dozen games once they're in the playoffs.

Pretty sure the 2011 Cardinals would agree.

METS SURGING TOWARD THE PLAYOFFS
Since the start of August, New York is leading the league in offense while also ranking in the top five in starter ERA (via Stats & Info).

Pretty sure the 2011 Cardinals would agree.

The 2011 Cardinals had to get healthy and they had to figure out all of their trade pieces. My memory could be failing me but I remember that team being banged up a lot. I also remember that being a good offensive team despite the record setting double plays they ground into.

The past 4 years of playoff baseball has been dominated by 'and then player X got really hot' although 2011 WS had Freese and Napoli both get hot.

DeGrom actually scares me more than any player in baseball. The only playoff team that hits well against him is the Cubs.

Opponents are only hitting .167 against him in day games and has only given up 2 HRs in day games.
Opponents are only hitting .199 against him pitching home games and has only given up 2 HRs in home games.

If you get to pick when Degrom pitches, he almost beats everyone for free except the Cubs.

I hear ya. It's sounding very familiar: The Mets didn't have Wright or d'Arnaud for a good chunk of the season and some other key players have missed stretches of time; then they made three really good offensive acquisitions at the trade deadline.

You still have to go out and win those playoff games, though. The Mets, on the whole, are not very playoff-experienced.

Most of them are young & getting their feet wet, but they also have 9 or 10 guys on the roster who've been to the postseason...including 6 that've been there more than once.

It's all about who's hot, healthy & lucky come October...and hopefully some of that experience rubs off.

Everything matters in October. I'm not discounting anything. I do think the Dodgers probably want to avoid the Cardinals and the Mets probably want to avoid the Cubs but other than that the NL is the wild west and anyone can get gunned down if you get in.

I just think your comment about run differential is meaningless. In April/May, Matz and Syndergaard were still in the minors. Cespedes was on the Tigers. This is a different team now. If you can't see this, I don't know what to tell you.

I agree that the playoffs are a crapshoot once the field Is set.
