Does anyone think Snell or Chap wants to stay with the Giants after this season? Or do they want to sign with another team even if the Giants offer them a long term contract (not saying they will).

I've resigned myself to the fact that Soler isn't movable.
Chapman, Snell and Forto absolutely should be traded though.
Yaz could get a decent return as well. Not a blue chipper, but maybe multiple lotto tix.

Chappy has been rumored to the Giants for years. I don’t think it is impossible to imagine him opting out and resigning with the Giants.

Same, but to a lessor extant with Snell.

So the question is, is it worth it to not trade them at the deadline if they both have shown interest in staying?

Snell has not shown any interest that I am aware of. I just think the Giants make sense for HIM to want to settle down with. And if they opt out, trading them does not eliminate the Giants as a landing spot.

My memory is hazy on this, but didn't the Yankees trade one of their players a few years ago for some prospects and then re-signed him that very offseason?

Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in ‘16

The Giants did it with Andres Torres. Not the same level as what we are talking about here, but it happened nonetheless.

Thanks I just remembered and was about to update my post. And they got Gleyber Torres in the trade as well.
Cubs paid a very high price for a rental, but I think they are more than happy with the results.

Kinda did it with Ruf as well.
Those are a different scenarios (as you mentioned with Torres). Chapman is an example of trading a guy off in his walk year for prospects, during the season, and then signing him back off the free agent market that very offseason.

Yup. It happens REALLY rarely, but it does happen and there are no rules against it (as there are in the NBA)

We need to do something. Sell and get someone for the future. Right now our future looks average at best.

I am in favor of trading Snell. Don’t get me wrong.

But remember that prospects traded at the deadline RARELY pan out.

Just a few years ago (2021), the dogs got Scherzer AND Turner from the Nats at the deadline for 4 prospects. On those 4 prospects, 1 is out of affiliated ball, one moved on the Rangers this past off season, one is a Casalli-level hitting backup catcher and one was an allstar reliever last year, but I am guessing has been hurt all this year.

The Giants might win a headline with a trade, but they will likely not win the marathon.

The Conforto to Mets ship may have sailed . . .
