I don't think anyone on the IL or the 40 man count against the minor league limit

I did scour the minor league transactions and found that the Giants have placed the following players on the minor league 60 day IL:
Marques Johnson, rp
Spencer Miles, rp
Liam Simon, rp
Michael Stryffeler, rp
Thomas Szapucki, rp
Cole Waites, rp
Nick Zwack, sp
Aeverson Arteaga, ss
Dariel Lopez, 3b

Additionally, apparently there is a full season IL list for the minor leagues as well. The Giants placed the following on that list:
Luis Bermudez, sp
Gerelmi Maldonado, sp
Melvin Pineda, sp

I know nothing about this limit and have only heard about it here.

That said, might this restriction be part of a bigger plan to apply ceilings and floors to salaries?

Not directly. It's definitely a movement over the last decade or so to reduce org costs though.

I was thinking that this is a follow up to the big reduction in farm systems implemented, I believe, in 2019.

Matos comes up tomorrow when Yaz goes out on paternity leave. They try like hell to trade Bart.

I think they are trying to sneak Bart through waivers. Let everyone lock themselves into rosters for a few days, then DFA him.

I am sure they are listening to trade offers as well, but I doubt that happens.

I was shocked that Miller made the club. How often do you hear of a guy getting optioned early in camp and never officially brought back to big league camp, only to get added to the active roster? It is pretty rare.

And while talk about Small has been, well, small, I had no idea that his injury would require at least 2 months of recovery time.

Here is my theory on the Bart situation. I think the Giants know that they won't find a trade partner but want to keep both him and Hummel. So they decide to send Hummel through waivers first. Once his situation is settled, they dfa Bart. The hopes are probably that they keep at least one at AAA to pair with Sabol at catcher. If they lose both, then they are shorthanded at AAA at catcher.

I know absolutely nothing about the kid. But he was just drafted last year, so he is completely raw and the Giants have a very long time to develop him.

His college numbers are less than impressive, though. Hard to translate college numbers into the pros, but I would rather see good numbers and question the level of competition he faced to inflate his numbers, than see bad numbers and wonder what the team saw in him.
