Close to what? Being a good coach?

Rudy T and Lenny wilkens were probably better coaches than Bird (not as good as players but damn good).
Rudy T for sure, but not a 'great' player for this discussion

Wilkens is a good call, HOF player and did make the top 75 list so I guess we can call him 'great'

I mean the guy was a great player which was what we were talking about. If we are talking best of the best and has to be Magic/Bird level or better OK...that's not Rudy T. But the guy had a 6 year stretch where he was an AS in 5 of them (the other missed too many games...pretty sure because of the punch by Kermit Washington).

I think stakes mentioned wilkens first so that was his good call.

I think Hall of Fame is a good dividing line for great, with top 75 list even better

splitting hairs, but I'd call what you describe elite (though guys like Bird are even above that). Just my opinion.....do wonder if Rudy T would have made HOF if career not cut short due to punch(last season was age 32).

He was a hell of a coach regardless.

Great players rarely make good coaches.

Yeah, you usually want the guys who really had to grind to get their spot because they weren’t super athletic.

Those guys typically have a high basketball IQ, and when you have to struggle yourself to master something, it often makes it easier to teach others.

A couple of all time great coaches (Brown, Spoelstra) never even played in the NBA

saw this in a couple Cavs sites saying Allen can sign an extension this summer for up to 3 years and $90 mil. Forget whether he is worth it or not, but seems really low for what he COULD sign for....isn't it?
