While there are a few QB's I do like in this draft there are none that I LOVE that scream take me at #9.. I honestly don't think we should take a QB at #9 this year... Round 2 maybe. I think Malik Willis may be our best fit but I wouldn't take him anywhere near #9. I like Sam Howell but he is more of a Round 2 guy to me. I think Kenny Pickett and Matt Coral are major hits or misses in this draft. Probably more upside then Willis or Howell but not sold on either and have major concerns with each but also know the upside is there. Pickett had a great year but if you go back to his first 3 years you wouldn't even consider drafting him at all... Players develop though and I do like him just very concerned using a 9th overall pick on him. Corral is going to come down to who develops him IMO.. He has a long ways to go to be a really good NFL QB... I worry about him reading defenses and forcing football but he also has terrific tools.

If you go off this years film alone Kenny Pickett would be the top guy... I like Malik Willis because he has upside, he is decently polished (like any QB he has a lot of polishing to go though) and he is more of a new wave QB who can escape and create with his legs.... I just can't buy into taking a QB #9 right now.
Good rundown. Thanks, DC. Desmond Ridder not on your dance card?

I agree. As it stands right now, it would be hard seeing #9 being used on any of these guys. Paton would have to see something pretty substantial in one of these guys to burn that kind of capital.

Apparently Tyreke Smith (#51) went to Sr. Bowl to assist in Trevor Pennines draft stock.

Ridder is on my dance card. He pretty well falls under the rest in this years class. Same with Carson Strong. Like, don't love... I see the good. But I am afraid... A QB has basically become like a date to me. I am afraid to commit and have my heart crushed. ;) Ridders is up there with these other players we have mentioned above. If we don't get a vet QB I just don't want to be stuck drafting some middle round backup like Brock Purdy.

I do like Carson Strong's game. He's tough and he's smart. I also like he can be had later int he draft.

It will be interesting to see how Paton plays this out. I think Lock could be pretty good if Hackett can coach him up a bit.

Then only way a QB should get draft is if you are sure he is the guy. I am not sold on any of these guys yet.

I would still pursue Rodgers or my preference Wilson if either become available via trade. Out side of those 2 I don’t know that there is a guy I would trade for and pay. If the Texans wanted to move on from Davis Mills, I would take a flyer, or Gardner Minshew. Neither will cost much in draft capital, have a shot to impress, and if it doesn’t work out you can swing again in 2023.

I think (hope) having an actual NFL Offensive system in place will showcase the talent that the team has. The Shurmur experience did leave the bar set pretty low.

Strong has a strong arm.... His knee concerns me a little bit but not a ton and he is one of those guys like you said you won't have to use a pick on.
I wouldn't touch a QB at #9 right now barring some crazy workouts and a few of them really rising... I feel like a guy like Ridder, Howell, etc you can probably get them at a decent spot if you need to. Of course it is the QB position so a few of these guys will start to rise after some "killer" proday. . Of course that seems logical to say but if we really want a guy like him we can move down in the first, trade up in the second type of thing to look at. I hate needing a QB!!! I think better chance we trade up with our 2nd for a QB then us staying at #9 and taking a QB right now. Ask me again in a month.

Yes, yes, yes... I know I am a DB whore but the thought of Surtain and Derek Stingley Jr together gets me ricocheting off the walls with excitement.

I’m all in on either Dean or Malik Willis. Stingley jr. would be tough to pass up

Edge rusher at #9
maybe again in the 2nd
cant have enough impact edge rushers
grab a OT or DL or QB with the other 2nd

heck sign Von back for a 2 year deal

that’s my plan unless Arod is here

BPA.. BPA... (Hopefully the value is there at EDGE)

If I had my way we would grab an elite QB in free agency. Draft Stingley in Round 1 to go with Surtain and grab Hall of Fame pass rushers in Round 2 and 3 and hall of famer OL in the middle rounds...

So pretty much a mock simulation style draft. ;)

You know Derek Stingley, Kaiir Elam, Smoke Monday.. Maybe trade a few OL away and move back up and grab Roger McCreary.... If not, Andrew Booth will do.

I was trying to remember the context when I heard Paton say it was a "big man" draft. At the time I took it as a reference to big men being the deeper talent base - over say the skill positions. He may - have also been suggesting that the Broncos were going to load up on big men in this draft.

From George Paton yesterday:
“I think it’s going be a pretty strong tackle draft. There’s some good ones here. We need to fill that void. Bobby did a nice job, but we need to solidify that position for the next five, six years or however long it is. I hope to do so this offseason. Maybe we bring Bobby back — he did some really good things. Calvin Anderson did some good things. Fleming did some good things. So some way or another, we’re going to fill that void at tackle.”

I think there are three OTs that are top 10 - Evan Neal, Bama - Charles Cross, Miss State - Ikem Ekwonu, NC State. Will all there of those go in the top 8? I hope not and we can take care of this void we’ve had for years.

Penning may be in this conversation now?

What Elite QB are you getting in free agency???
Ryan Fitzpatrick?
Andy Dalton?
Cam Newton?
Jameis Winston?
Marcus Mariota?

There are QBs, but using elite with anyone of them would be a stretch at best.

just my guess, but Penning may have moved into the back end of the first round of the draft, but seriously doubt top 10. I’d be fine if he goes in top 8 and pushes another better prospect down to us though. ;)

Jess,

I said "if I had it my way", that was sorta the point of the comment. Don't take that literal. I don't expect it to happen. There aren't many out there...

It was a joke. The scenario (which you didn't quote all of it) was a dream not a reality. I wish we would draft a hall of famer long snapper too.

Fair enough.

What path does the Hoop Community want to see the Broncos take at QB?
  • Trade multiple picks and players for Aaron Rodgers.
  • Trade multiple picks and maybe player(s) for Russell Wilson.
  • Trade for Jimmy G.
  • Trade for Kirk Cousins.
  • Trade for Gardner Minshew.
  • Draft a guy and roll with Lock.
  • Roll with Lock.
I am not in the trade for Rodgers camp.

I am more ok with Wilson as he is younger.

I am out on Jimmy G. and Cousins.

I would be ok with Gardner Minshew, drafting a guy if there is one that Paton believes in, or just rolling with Lock.

I feel like Lock has had a poor opportunity while he was here. First getting hurt, then the COVID year, and then not really having an opportunity, and then having to try to over come the Shurmur effect. I will say Lock didn’t take full advantage of his starts in in 2020.

I think Lock still has a shot to be an above average starter in the right situation, and if reality meets his potential it could buy time until there is that guy you trade up for. I also get a feeling that Paton and Hackett have a plan, and that is something that has been missing in Denver for a bit.

I completely understand where people are coming from when they say they are ready to move on from Lock, and don’t fault them for that opinion.
