Being a hotshot young new Head football coach and offensive guru - I would move Mienirz to center and draft an OG. Cushingberry would a top back up for LG/C/RG. Maybe move one of the swing tackles to OG. I would also draft a RT who would be good enough to start sometime in Year One and nimble enough to logically move to LT when Bolles retires and wears out.

For me - it was just stunning that Munch wasn't brought back and was replaced by a guy named Berry with slim credentials. It is telling though - a big time message to the world - the Broncos want to be bullies in the offensive trenches.

These moves make me wonder, but they are made with sure footedness by Hackett. I will give him that. I'm not alarmed at all about it because it is certainly not "same old - same old" - at least someone is trying something new.

Which takes me back to Paton. He has already considered these things I am now wondering and moved on. I trust Paton - there is no reason not to.

Zone blocking. Maybe Munch not a good fit? Looking to prune branches from the Alex Gibbs coaching tree? Should be exciting to watch it take form regardless.

Yeah, appears Munch wasn't a good fit with the new coaching staff here. Was hoping maybe Chris Kuper got that gig since he has been around, played for Denver and worked in the same type of system as Hackett and his coaching style. Hopefully Berry is good.

What is looks like to me is an attempt to inject energy through the organization and roster.

In this modern NFL - you cannot be back on your heals for the pass rush - so you have to show you can run the football and then throw it over their head on play action. I have heard that Munch specializes in the inside zone blocking schemes and that this OC wants to go to a more outside zone system. Except last year with Munch the Broncos ran the outside zone the 2nd in the league frequency.

I am happy to see @LGM is now officially on the Trevor Penning bandwagon... He likes those OL born and raised in Iowa. ;)

A timely article to discuss your point, Mingo.

Each year, there are certain players that just pop out at you that happen to play a position the Broncos could really use .. Of the potential first rounders, Nakobe Dean is the guy I'd love to see the Broncos taking .. but there is a caveat :

If the Broncos are picking at #9, that very likely means we have not made a deal for Rodgers or Wilson ... which means we would either:

- be rolling with Drew Lock ( which I would love, however, it is highly unlikely )

- be going with a recently signed FA QB .. and I do not want anything to do with Mitch Trubisky or Jamis Winston, etc

- we would have made a trade for a journeyman stopgap like Cousins or Jimmy G that does not require a first rounder

There is the possibility that we could draft a QB on Day 2 or later - but would that guy beat out Lock to start ?? .. It's possible, but would we really go into the season with Lock and a rookie ??

So the player that I;d most like to see the Broncos draft - Nakobe Dean - comes with the possibility of enduring another year with uninspired QB play ...

Ok, I’ve already got Channing Tindall penciled in to chase Mahomes around in Denver for the next decade. I have no idea what I’m talking about, but I love this kid’s game.

Nice. In the very next post I’m carrying on about another Bulldog LB. Lots of talent in Athens this last year.

#9 is probably a little too early for Nakobe Dean to be honest. I love Dean. He is my favorite LB in this draft and I think he ends up going pretty high but for a team loaded with ILB (assuming we re-sign 1) I think there will be better value at 9 at a position we probably need a little more. Dean's value is hard to judge right now because he was the top LB in college football but he isn't expected to test out of this world either. Means nothing now but Brooks and DJ both have him going later in Round 1 and his national grade is outside the top 15 right now. Still a special player/person so he could easily go way higher then that.

Georgia has a lot of them. Quay Walker is out there as well and one of the best LB's Nolan Smith surprisingly stayed in college. Will be interested to see how Georgia CB Kelee Ringo develops this year. S Lewis Cine should go in Round 2.

I know I love me some DB's but Auburn CB Roger McCreary is finally getting some first round love. IMO, he was the most underrated CB in college football the last two seasons.

I don't disagree here DC, #9 is high, however, I think if we pass on Dean, the team would live to regret it ... Dean brings something different than our FA LBs, and while I definitely would love to see Jewell back, Dean would be a fantastic compliment -- or vice versa ..

I think Dean is a difference maker and a guy opposing offensives would need to scheme around -- I see him and Surtain as the young, superstar defensive duo that would not just sustain the Top 3 ranking our D has, but inject even more identity into the D ..

Whenever a difference maker is available at a spot like 9, you gotta consider taking him

Surely not going to disagree with you on Nakobe Dean as a player. I always preach BPA so I won't complain if we do end up with Nakobe Dean but I am also very happy with what we saw out our ILB's last year. I love Dean as you know.

Call me a DB whore but if Derek Stingley Jr is there when we pick and we pass on him to team him up with Patrick Surtain I am going to cringe at the "What could have been"... Stingley has been hurt the last two years but I have never graded a FR CB as high as I did when Stingley was a FR... He is going to be special.

I am liking Willis, but draft day he could end up going before 9.

He will require some development, but would not be upset if we had Lock, who I think would be a great fit in the Hackett offense, and Willis to develop. You might bring in a vet as the backup for 2022.

I thought Lock showed growth and maturity with how things went last year. I feel Lock would have been the better choice to start last year, and we still have a fair amount of unknown with him.

Three things that might work in Lock’s favor
  • He played better in 2022.
  • He doesn’t have history with the new coaching staff, and he seems to be a good fit.
  • Hackett and Paton don’t have to force the QB solution, they have a year or two to find the long term solution. Fangio didn’t have time last year, and fans don’t want to wait. Hackett will need to find a way to win games with whoever is selected to be the starting QB. Listening to Hackett’s press conference and the way he described the offense, it sound like a good fit for Lock if he has indeed grown like I believe.
I would not be surprised to see Rodgers, Wilson, or Lock starting in 2022. We will have a lot of answers in 3.5 months.
