Agreed. At this point Pierre would really only be at risk if he suffers a camp injury and Gilbert shows out. The coaches love the kid's size & coverage skills. Layne is clearly the most athletic of the group, but it has yet to translate to the field and time is running out for him. Honestly what these guys do on the ST coverage units may determine who stays & who goes (between Layne & Gilbert at least).

Once a player has an issue like that, it just doesn't get corrected.

He's electric with the ball, and can get open with his excellent route running, but his mental issues with catching it are always going to be a drawback. It's the only thing holding him back from all-pro status. He certainly changes the threat level of the offense, but it's a double-edged sword.

Yep. He's a far-cry from the Donte Moncriefs of the world, but he will definitely be under a microscope this year. I'm more worried about Ebron than I am DJ to be honest. He has a much longer history with drops than DJ.

Ebron is the exact same. He is incredible if he catches it. But he frequently kills drives because of his drops.

Both of them CAN make this offense significantly better, but the way they play, neither are really necessary. Both are playing their way out of town.

Players that made big impacts on day 1 of pads:

Najee Harris
  • Great 1st practice, but Tomlin wants to see more.
  • Had a few questionable reps early in backs-on-backers but came alive and started dominating players like Spillane & Allen (lol). Tomlin loves his appetite for contact.

Alex Highsmith
  • He looked fantastic, albeit against lesser competition. Tomlin was quick to point out that he was going against a rookie (Moore Jr) most of the day and not Chuks. But Highsmith asserted himself nicely on day 1.

Pat Freiermuth
  • Answered the call early with a block on Highsmith. Stopped him cold. But then lost a few reps to Highsmith.
  • Great deep ball catches down the sidelines.
  • Play action emphasis over the middle. Couple of big plays his way.

More Positives:
  • Many reporters noted an overall vastly improved look & feel to the offense... Not many "stood out" but collectively they won they day vs the defense.
  • DBs looked formidable. Cam Sutton had a couple of big breakups on Claypool. Competition at the nickle/slot CB is going to be tightly contested. With Brooks Jr being somewhat limited yesterday, Maulet shined. James Pierre looked fluid... There was a play where Haden was moved into the slot with Pierre & Sutton outside. Interesting look. Gilmore & Denmark also had some great breakups. Shakur Brown saw more reps at outside CB than inside, but nothing notable from him. Denmark is another big framed DB, in the same mold of Layne, Pierre & Gilbert. Those 4 have a great blend of athleticism & size.

Disappointments: Easily the OL. It was a patchwork day without Dotson, and both OTs being limited. The Chaz Green experiment looks to be short-lived. Dude was atrocious. Dan Moore Jr looked lost before being replaced by Haeg & Collins. Seek no comfort with the OL depth lol. A positive spin here is that Trai Turner wasn't mentioned at all on anything I listened to. That should be viewed as a good thing, right?

Other Notes:
  • Killebrew was rotating in with 2nd team safeties... He's listed as LB on the roster, but he looks to be more of a backup for Edmunds. Tre Norwood was the primary backup to Minkah.
  • Ingram & Marsh were the primary 2nd team OLBs. Jamir Jones saw time with 2nd team as well. Quincy Roche was with the 3rd team.

INJURY REPORT:
FP: Bush (withheld from backs on backers though), Brooks
DNP: Dotson, JCH, Tuitt & Cody White
LP: TJ Watt, Chuks, Banner were all withheld from teams activities

Practice Injuries: Ebron (elbow - day to day), Coyle (stinger - day to day)

This means next to nothing, buts its encouraging to see. They used a lot of pony sets last year in camp as well but only a few times in the season.
