Good insider info there. Could be a good 4th Rd target if he doesn't skyrocket up the draft boards after combine or pro day.

Yep...the Steelers will most likely be at the UGA pro day with all of the prospects they have so they will get to see him twice. I was thinking one of the 4ths as well if he's as good as McMichaels thinks he his.

nevermind .
i didnt realize vannet was a FA. I thought i read the steelers "thought" gentry could block.

They need a versatile TE, they miss that badly.

seth devalve could be worth a look fwiw

For me they are in the same boat they were in last offseason regarding the TE position. But worse off now that Grimble is elsewhere.

That leaves McDonald (IF they exercise the club option), Gentry & CSW... Vannett is UFA, and Rader is ERFA.

CSW came on late last offseason but was injured. Maybe this is his year he cracks the 53.

Speaking of Jesse James... I thought I heard/read somewhere that Detroit has some buyer's remorse with Jesse James. Didn't live up to the contract and their rookie Hock made waves. Maybe the Steelers find a way to bring James back?

Yea his contract isn't very TE friendly. But he does have a built-in out after 2020... Still steep base salary & cap hit for just a 1-yr if the intention is to take the out.

Deep base for what he brings imho. He wants to Re work that then let's talk.

Quite the blocker, but his route running leaves a lot to be desired. Good hands though.
He does have decent hands.

For a school that has run a pro style OFC since the Mark Richt era, they've done a poor job of developing TEs under Kirby Smart. Yet they keep landing these great prospects.

They're in worse shape actually if they don't retain Vannett.

Gentry, Rader, and or CSW need to show improvement early.

J. James...does he replace Vannett? I'd be okay with that, but I don't see McDonald & James fitting into this cap situation.

Gentry & CSW are the only 2 under contract right now until McDonald has his club option exercised.

With an option year...the figure is fixed so it's yeah or neigh? How does that work?
I'm not entirely sure. But the contract does state those years are club options needing to be exercised. Being that its an "option" I tend to think its yay or neigh. But with the figure being fixed I guess it makes sense to count it against the cap until that decision is made.

Okay, that makes sense because they do appear to be counting McD's option in the cap figures we're able to access on line.

So...it looks like he'll count as $7.1 mil if they take the option...$1.4 in dead money if they don't.

FYI...I don't think I'm going to surprise anybody as he was just a 6th round pick, but I'm hearing Isiah Buggs is not the answer, probably will never start or be an impact player. Alualu will probably make this team as the #1 DE backup again.
