Yea this was a def head scratcher for me. Seems they are going to patch work a defense and hope for a dead line trade, at least that's my opinion.

I think it's a combination of patchwork and trying to be as cap friendly as possible.
We can pretty much run it back, but it's good that the club has some versatility in case something opens up at the last minute.

Some of these contracts are astonishing, but it's what the market dictates.

We didnt draft nor sign a RHD. I hope there is a plan in place to fill this need.

Yep and this worries me a lot. If our kids didn't see the writing on the wall and got stronger in this off season then I have to say there's a conditioning coach who needs to be replaced. I still say if we could land Savard I think it may work a lot better.

I'd like to see them maybe take a shot at Savard. He is a big defense guy 1st player and isn't afraid of physicality, I watched a few videos of him and he will hit you.

I'd be ok with that.

Still need to see what happens with the Kraken expansion draft.
Wouldn't be opposed to sending a 2nd or 3rd rounder to them to take JVR off our hands.

Do we need a PP specialist on offense?
Or do we keep running out the same group that struggled mightily in the postseason?

Big grain of salt with the lines/pairings because I have no idea what the plan is on the back end. You have to assume they want Provorov continuing to take d-zone starts and they want Gustafsson getting o-zone starts. So Gustafsson probably doesn't play with Provorov. I think saddling Gustafsson with Hagg or Braun would be silly. So Gustafsson with Myers or Sanheim is what you're left with. He seems most likely to play on the right side, so Sanheim? But then you've got either Provorov/Braun or Hagg/Braun which aren't the most appealing. Unless they end up keeping Ghost, but at this point there's no reason to. Gustafsson, Sanheim, Provorov are probably your PP guys, don't need Ghost there anymore. I'm going with Provorov/Braun as a shutdown 1st pairing. Sanhiem/Gustafsson as your offense first pair. And Hagg/Myers as a complimentary shut down pair that can still move the puck a little bit with Myers? I dno guys. Seems weird.

Giroux (8.75) - Couturier (4.33) - Voracek (8.25)
Lindblom (3) - Hayes (7.14) - Konecny (5.5)
JvR (7) - Patrick (2M) - Farabee (.925)
Raffl (1.6) - Laughton (2.3) - NAK (1.075M)
Frost (.863), Laczynski (.925)

Provorov (6.75) - Braun (1.8)
Sanheim (3.25) - Gustafsson (3M)
Hagg (1.6M) - Myers (3M)
Ghost (4.5)

Hart (.730)
Elliot (1.5M)

Cap Total: 79.8 out of an allowable 81.5

I have to say In my honest opinion that our PP may be a coaching problem. We have way more than enough talent on the top end to put together a good PP unit. The one thing we all notice is there doesn't seem to be a lot of crashing the net during our PP. That has to change. Someone needs to start getting those nasty goals. I really liked the way NAK and Laughton played that way last season.

Well they either have it figured out or their gonna try to see who clicks with who. My main concern is.putting too much pressure on Hart game in and game out.

As a follow on to this "too much pressure on Hart"...... I was listening to NHL Radio on Sirius XM alot last week and this week. They got on the topic of Lundqvist going to the Capitals. The meat of the discussion was that with NYR, Lundqvist had 'defense first' systems with AV, and Tortellini. Caps are quite opposite. So the commentators were saying that even in the #2 spot, he is going to get worked over much harder than he was in NY, and speculated he would not be nearly as effective in the Caps system.

Saw an article that Sami Vatanen may be available on a 1 year $2-3 mill. deal. Right handed shot who could play 1st pairing with Provy. Maybe they are still trying to deal Ghost to open the space.

Provorov (6.75) - Vatanen (2.5)
Sanheim (3.25) - Myers (3M)
Hagg (1.6M) - Gustafsson (3M)
Braun (1.8)

Looks better, I think?

This might provide a little more clarity on the Gustafsson signing:

Being friends with fellow Swedish defenseman Robert Hagg of the Flyers should help Gustafsson with the transition to a new team.

In fact, the two are currently practicing together back home in their native country. Gustafsson also is friends with Oskar Lindblom, who is making his way back to full health after a battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

“They’re two very good guys to know," Gustafsson said. “I’m looking forward to playing with them."

Agree with that 100%. They were allergic to the slot/net front on the PP far too often. In the playoffs they couldn't get into the zone to get set up either. IT was just a disaster. That's gotta be fixed.

Didn't really think about that for Lundqvist. The Caps don't play defense at all, so he's in for a real treat.
