I'd be interested in seeing of Cain could do some bullpen work. He has usually done well, even in the past few years, for the first several innings, and then blown up. Doubtful Cain would be interested, though.
Who gives a crap if Cain is interested or not? He is pulling down 20M in 2017. If the Giants want him to assist Murph, that is what he should do.

So, IF Flan comes back, I think it would be a no-brainer to put Decker at 1st. The Giants appear to be grooming him to take over for Boch eventually, so giving him a new job every year is a good idea.

Cain would have been in the bullpen down the stretch already if they thought he was an option there. He'll get every opportunity to be the 5th guy until he falters and/or Blach blows them away.

Apparently the Giants are going to restructure Bum this off season.

While that makes sense, it really hurts the Giants. Paying him mire just removes the Giants flexibility. He will get AT LEAST 25M per.

The qualifying offer is expected to be worth $17.2M this year.

Pagan was worth about $7-$8M last year. I don't think we can risk the QO on him.

They'll talk about it, I'm sure they'll get a lot of pressure from Bum's camp.

I'm on the side that believes Bum and his team signed that contract hoping to gain some security and they took the risk of losing money in the long run, so why should the Giants have to pay out then?

No way does he get a QO. When I brought that up a few months back, it was a brainstorm idea.

I guess I wouldn't expect him to anything different, because at least a few of these guys will need to come back.

So, who stays?

Law - 100%
Smith - 100%
Strickland - 90%
Kontos - 75%
Nathan - 0%
Casilla - 15%
Romo - 30%
Lopez - 5%
Gearrin - 30%
Osich - team control
Okert - team control
Rogers - team control

Forgot Strickland! Yeah, he's virtually a lock.

Not sure I'd go as high as 15% with Casilla but the Giants can be a sentimental lot at times. They might chalk up this year as just a run of bad luck and bring him back, but only as a setup or middle relief guy. Whether HE would settle for that is possibly another matter.

Of course. And Bum has stood behind this argument since he has blown up. And in an ideal world, this would be the case.

But in the big time sports world, you gotta make sure Bum is happy. He has ALREADY earned his entire contract value, probably 3 times over.

All that said, though, the Giants won't sign a new contract ignoring what they already have on paper with him. For example, they won't sign him to a Cueto-deal (with an opt-out). That just doesn't make sense. They currently own him through 2019. Any contract he signs would need to improve that situation for the Giants. That probably means a small raise (and removal of team options) for the next 3 years and 3 years added at current-day top value (25M per?)

Something like a 6/110 starting in 2017.

That is the Giants' way. Think Peavy, Hudson, Lincecum, etc. Cain will be starting in the 5th spot come April 2017, unless he his injured.

While I don't want to see the Giants do that now, if they want him past the current contract, they probably will want to make that restructured deal now. Otherwise he gets pissed and refuses to sign for them. Hope he doesn't go full prima donna on the team.

I think that with the lack of Casilla appearances in the post season, and his emotional outburst after game 4, he is probably close to 0% returning. And considering the Giants have shown an increasing aptitude toward letting players walk after non WS championship years, I doubt the sentimental side will come out.

1b and 3b coaches dismissed.

When will Bam Bam be dismissed?
He has to be on thin ice with the way the offense froze so badly in the 2nd half of the season. Just wildly guessing here that he has the 1st half of 2017 to turn the offense around or he gets let go.

Now, his home park is a domed stadium so there are a lot of other factors besides distance that he would have to worry about in AT&T.

His wRC+, which accounts how many runs a player was responsible for, including park factors (average is 100), has averaged 116 over the last 3 years, which would have put him as our 4th most productive hitter on our team this year and his 123 this year would have made him the 2nd most productive. Nunez's last 3 years is at 96, reaching 100 this year, Gonor last 3 years is at 92, achieving 98 this year.

He might not be a huge upgrade, but we need to lengthen the lineup somehow.
Thanks SFGRTB. It would be interesting to see how many of those were aided by the home stadium in Houston but, at least with this chart, his power would play at SF. SSS, but he hasn't hit well in 6 games in AT&T, going 3 for 20 with 1 walk and no XBHs. However, he has some defensively flexibility, which the FO seems to love but he may not be very good defensively. I'm not as opposed to this idea but still not sure he would be good for the team. I like my acquisitions to have a consider upgrade possibility compared to who they would replace. He may have that but I'm not sure yet.

You don't replace coaches mid-season without dumping the manager first. And we all know THAT ain't happening.

Ser Bam Bam is safe through 2017, it would appear.

With the QO set at 17.2M, what are the chances that Jansen is protected? That is a LOT to pay for a closer. Maybe he would not coast a pick...

Larry Baer on the radio today said it's not necessarily as simple as 'just sign a LF and a closer, done'. He mentioned how there are fewer and fewer quality free agents each year to pursue. You may have to trade someone, which creates a hole somewhere.

Since 3B (Gillaspie, Nunez, Arroyo, Posey for a few games maybe) and 2B (Panik, Tomlinson, Arroyo) are positions of depth to some extent don't be surprised to see guys like that dealt. Also prospects, including Ty Blach, might have to be dealt to shore up weaknesses.

Just spitballing here, these guys do a good job so whatever moves they make I will be ok with in general.

Someone mentioned (I dont remember where - maybe Docs site??) a potential match with the Yanks on a Belt/Betances swap. I think that is an interesting deal to look at.

It frees up 1B for Posey and maybe Parker or Shaw. It frees up the Belt money (Belt is not paid too much, so he is certainly "tradeable"). It adds the shut down closer we have been screaming for.

Yep that's the kind of thing that might happen. Creates an even bigger hole then that has to be filled in terms of the lineup though. Do we really think Parker is ready to provide that kind of OPS, or Shaw? Of course, all trades are a risk.

I'd be sad to see Belt go, but man would he love hitting dingers into that short porch in right at Yankee Stadium
