Why does this post make me think we end up signing Chapman?
If we do, I am ok with that.

But it think we would be much better served signing Malancon for 3 years at 2/3 the AAV.

I'd rather not sign Chapman, personally, because I think his contract is going to be the most ridiculous of the three main closers on the market. Just sharing a thought that popped in my head as soon as I read cal's post. I pictured the scenario of the FO trying to be in the middle of it for publicity sake, only to actually land him.

Bill King was the best NBA announcer I ever listened to. Simply awesome.

i listened to chick hearn (lakers) in my wonderbread years. move to the bay area in 74 and listened to king et al since, but hearn was in a class by himself, almost vin scully'ist. listening on the radio i could tell where all 10 players were, where the ball was, and what play was in development. mucho props to king, but hearn was the best imo

i don't want another millstone contract hanging on the giants. chapman would be that. my season tickets have gone up 20%/yr as long as i can remember. we need a closer, not another contract that will limit the giants flexibility in '18, 19, '20.... we don't need the second coming of rivera, just someone who bochy trusts to deliver the 9th

Could this be a sign for how nutty the free agent market will be this offseason - Charlie Morton, after pitching in just 4 games in 2016, signed a 2 year deal for $7 million each year, with incentives of up to $5 million total, with the Houston Astros? Jeremy Hellickson must be kicking himself right now.

Minor League Free Agents
23 players from the San Francisco Giants organization were declared minor league free agents last week, several of which are former members of the San Jose Giants.

The former San Jose Giant free agents this offseason:

Junior Arias, OF

Minor league veteran Junior Arias played briefly for San Jose this year seeing action in nine games in the California League (.179 AVG). Spent the bulk of the season in Augusta (A) where he ranked third on the GreenJackets with 11 home runs (.275 AVG). 2016 marked his first season in the Giants organization after seven years in the Reds farm system. Was a non-roster invitee to major league spring training this year.

Jose Casilla, RHP

Both Casilla brothers are free agents this offseason — Santiago at the major league level while Jose has been declared a minor league free agent. Jose has been in the Giants organization since 2006 having spent parts of three years in San Jose (2010 playoffs, 2011 and 2013). Had a banner 2015 season in Richmond (AA) compiling a 1.44 ERA in 56 innings out of the bullpen. Returned to the Flying Squirrels this year and was solid, but not nearly as dominant (3.59 ERA in 47 innings).

Jake Dunning, RHP

Dunning was an outstanding closer in San Jose during the second half of the 2011 season before seeing significant action out of the San Francisco bullpen two years later. He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues though since 2014 and despite an excellent spring training this year, was unable to get out of Sacramento (AAA) during the regular season. Posted a 4.85 ERA in 49 relief appearances for the River Cats this year.

Austin Fleet, RHP

Fleet has seen significant action as both a starter and reliever during his seven years in the Giants organization. Was a member of the San Jose Giants during the 2013 season and briefly again this year (5.32 ERA in 22 innings). The right-hander spent most of this season pitching out of the Sacramento bullpen where he logged a 3.44 ERA in 36 innings.

Darren Ford, OF

Ford is in the midst of his second stint in the Giants organization. The starting center fielder on San Jose’s record-breaking 2009 championship team, Ford reached the major leagues two years later, but hasn’t seen any time in “The Show” since. He played in the Mariners system in 2012 and in the Pirates organization the following year before returning to the Giants in 2014. This season, Ford hit a combined .243 in 119 games between Richmond and Sacramento. The speedster has 450 stolen bases over 12 career minor league seasons.

Robbie Garvey, OF

Garvey was a significant contributor in San Jose this season serving as the club’s primary left fielder after his arrival in early-June. In 69 games for the Giants, Garvey batted .269 with 10 doubles, four triples, one home run and 11 stolen bases. 2016 marked his fourth straight year in the California League as Garvey played for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes from 2013–15 while in the Dodgers organization (was released by LA after the 2015 season). Garvey was originally a member of the Brewers system and has also spent time in the independent Frontier League during his career.

Travis Ishikawa, 1B

The 2014 NLCS hero, Ishikawa returned for a third stint in the Giants organization this year batting .257 with 12 home runs in 76 games for Sacramento. Now 33 years old, Ishikawa has hit 141 career home runs in the minor leagues, in addition to his 488 career games played at the major league level. Ishikawa last played in the big leagues with Pittsburgh during the 2015 season. A San Jose Giant in 2004, 2005 and 2007, Ishikawa still ranks tied for fourth in franchise history with 36 home runs.

Ryan Lollis, OF

Lollis was a San Jose Giant during parts of the 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 seasons. 2015 was a banner year for the veteran outfielder as he led the entire Giants farm system with a .340 batting average while playing across three levels. His success in the minor leagues that year earned Lollis a call-up as he received 12 at-bats in San Francisco. The numbers dropped off for Lollis in 2016 as he spent the entire season back in Sacramento (.253 AVG, 3 HR in 111 games).

Jose Reyes, RHP

Reyes pitched in 44 games (28 starts) with San Jose over the last two seasons combining for a 5.59 ERA over 178 innings. The right-hander has been in the Giants organization since 2010.

Angel Villalona, 1B

2016 was a disappointing year for Villalona as he appeared in only 24 games with Richmond and batted .143 (1 HR). The slugging first baseman mashed 36 home runs over parts of three seasons in San Jose (2009, 2013, 2015). He was a California League All-Star in 2013, but struggled mightily to handle Double-A pitching with a combined batting average of .215 over the last four years in Richmond. Villalona was a top 5 prospect in the Giants organization in 2008 and 2009.

While it remains to be seen if any of the above former San Jose Giants will continue in the organization going forward, there were four impending minor league free agents who have already re-signed with the Giants — utility player Cristian Paulino, catchers Jeff Arnold and Eliezer Zambrano and infielder Juan Ciriaco.

Paulino led San Jose with 29 stolen bases this year to go with a .259 batting average and four home runs in 81 games while playing both infield and outfield. He could return to the SJ Giants next spring. Arnold was a California League All-Star in San Jose during the 2013 season. He missed most of 2014 with a knee injury before spending part of the ’15 campaign back in the Cal League. This year, the veteran catcher hit .220 with three home runs in 56 games for Richmond. Zambrano has been in the organization since 2006, including brief stints in San Jose during the 2009 and 2013 seasons. He hit just .185 in 33 games with Richmond this year and is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League. The 33-year old Ciriaco began his pro career in 2003 and has been a member of the Giants organization since 2008. A SJ Giant in 2008, 2010 and 2011, Ciriaco played in 84 games for Sacramento this year and batted .269 with four home runs.

We’ll continue to update the status of these and other former San Jose Giants players throughout the offseason here on the blog.

Going off this, the Giants have signed Jose Dominguez, Orlando Calixte, Chris Marrero, and Kraig Sitton.

Chris Marrero is interesting. He won the AAA homerun derby and was the MVP of the All-Star game. Hit 23 homers with an .838 OPS. Former 1st rounder by the Nationals. Plays 1B and OF, bats right-handed.

Jose Dominguez is also interesting. He pitched 35.2 innings for San Diego this year with pretty bad numbers. But he throws up to 100 and has a slider and changeup. Maybe the Giants can figure something out with him.

Calixte (absolutely no clue how to pronounce that) is a super-utility player.

Sitton is a lefty reliever, upper 80s fastball and slider combo.

Great post. I've been following the minor league free agents and had thought about posting this but decided not to do so. Don't really think much about re-signing any of them, unless maybe Ishikawa gets one more call from the Giants, as a swan song.

Only heard about the Dominguez signing. Most of these guys strike me as ones that won't make it out of spring training, but I think that about many of the minor league free agents the Giants sign every year and they usually stick around to post mediocre numbers and block a guy already in the farm who is more deserving of that roster spot.
Marrero seems redundant to Kyle Blanks. Got to wonder if the team is hedging their bets on Blanks being healthy come next April.

So the Astros just signed Josh Reddick to a 4 year deal. Seems the Astros are throwing this mediocre free agent market into a world of upheaval. Its going to embolden other free agents to expect a lot more in either dollars and/or years.

There's always that one team early in the offseason that does this. Determined to get their guys, they attack the market and basically set the tone.

Giants have also signed LHP Michael Roth, INF Juniel Querecuto, and OF Wynton Bernard. Bernard ranks as the 3rd best MiLB free agent hitter according to fangraphs. Calixte is 6th.

Brett Cecil just signed a 4 year deal worth $30.5M with the Cardinals. I was hoping the Giants would target him.

Imagine Melancon's contract now . . or Jansen's. Considering the free agent class, these deals are starting to look scary.

Seems like the minor league free agents signed are more than normal for this time of year.

I was thinking that too, and more guys from outside the organization. We use to just re-sign our guys and pepper in a few veterans. Seems like the Giants are targeting some higher-profile guys.

If they are fairly quiet in that department January through March, then it will probably even out but if they do what they typically do in those months, we are going to see a few more veterans in the upper minors in 2017. The upper farm is looking pretty barren though.
