Rams cut Daryl Richardson. I missed that. I'm a bit surprised. Figured he was their #2 back, though they did draft Tre Mason.

Frank Gore - RB - 49ers

The Sacramento Bee expects the 49ers' running back pecking order to begin with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter to open the 2014 season.

Things could change in training camp or after preseason games, but for now this is the likeliest outcome. Perhaps Hunter or Marcus Lattimore, or rookie Carlos Hyde will earn more playing time as the season progresses. For now, we'd consider Gore a shaky, lower-end fantasy RB2 entering his age-31 season, albeit still the favorite to lead the 49ers in 2014 carries. Hunter seems locked in as the change-of-pace back, even if Hyde or Lattimore overtakes Gore.

Our offense is in the best shape I've seen it since Steve Young was playing. I'm stoked!

Marcus Martin - C - 49ers

49ers third-round C Marcus Martin will see time at guard during OTAs.

Martin played his freshman and sophomore years at left guard for USC before taking over at center in 2013. The 49ers view him as capable of playing multiple positions on the interior line. Martin should compete with Daniel Kilgore for the starting center job, while providing depth at both guard spots.

Marcus Lattimore - RB - 49ers

49ers second-year RB Marcus Lattimore is participating in rookie minicamp on a limited basis.

Lattimore was expected to sit out minicamp with soreness in both legs, but the 49ers have cleared him to take handoffs and run through holes at "half speed." Although we're skeptical of Lattimore's 2014 impact after two catastrophic college knee injuries, it's a good sign that he's healthy enough to return to the field. Lattimore can participate in rookie camp because he spent all of 2013 on the reserve/NFI list. He's vying for snaps with Kendall Hunter and rookie Carlos Hyde behind Frank Gore.

Marcus Lattimore - RB - 49ers

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh revealed second-year RB Marcus Lattimore is "working through something" and will not take part in rookie minicamp.

Lattimore is eligible for rookie camp despite not technically being a rookie because he spent all of 2013 on the reserve/non-football injury list. Harbaugh did not disclose what is bothering Lattimore, but said it's not related to his balky knees. We're not counting on Lattimore to be a major 2014 contributor. The 49ers' second-round pick of Carlos Hyde suggests they aren't, either.

Jimmie Ward - DB - 49ers

The 49ers plan to use first-round pick Jimmie Ward on roughly 60 percent of their defensive snaps as a rookie.

Ward isn't converting to corner full-time, though he has the skill set to do so. Initially, he'll back up Eric Reid and Antoine Bethea on early downs, and cover slot receivers in nickel packages. The Niners technically did not draft a "starter" at No. 30 overall, but Ward will play well over half of the snaps.

Luke Marquardt - T - 49ers

49ers waived/injured OT Luke Marquardt.

An undrafted free agent last season, Marquardt reportedly re-fractured the same foot that sidelined him his senior year in college and his rookie season in the NFL. He had been participating fully in the 49ers offseason program, and there were even rumblings San Francisco saw Marquardt as their swing-tackle of the future. At 6-foot-8, 317, Marquardt has a ton of upside, but he will have to prove his health to make a mark in the league. He'll spend 2014 on I.R.

Marquardt is an UDFA, Martin had started NFL games at LT.....first no surprise, and second...why is this a bad thing? why is Martin over Marquardt a bad thing?

didn't we trade for Martin?

Freeman a free man; QB released by Giants

Boy, does it suck to be Josh Freeman right about now (within the NFL, I mean). All it took was 1 special needs "Make a Wish" kid, who was allowed to coach the Bucs in 2013, for Freeman to go from young QB with physical gifts to being no more than a camp arm.

The G-Men kept Curtis Painter over Freeman.
