We haven't had the need to have a super high payroll the last few years because we had a lot of team friendly contracts and control on a lot of key players. Payroll will go up. Just because it's not being used in one off season doesn't mean it won't or can't be in the top 5. We have needs and holes to fill but it's better to be safe than sorry if you're going to break the bank on guys that are good but aren't special type players.

I agree with much of what you are saying but I think last off season was a failure as well.

Our payroll is at 101,925,000 right now which doesn't include the amount we'll have to pay in arbitration. So if the Simpson and Davis are keen on a 125 million budget then we really couldn't afford to give Choo 20 million a year, sign the arbitration elligible players, and then do some mid level shopping. I really do wish Simpson and David would open up their pockets a bit more, but as of now JD has to figure out a way to put the best team out there without going over the budget assigned to him.

Thanks for the answer to that question. I agree, I think 125 mill is low for this team and its worth. I did state the other day that I thought 7 years for Choo at $20 mill a year is too much. And to me it is the years more than the money.

I think initially it was a success last off season given the hopes we had for Berkman and how they salvaged the situation after losing Nap, Ham and MY but I agree the moves last season turned to be bunk. That said tho I do believe replacing Kins' bat with Fielders is great and I believe he will tear it up at RBIA. Luckily the off season isn't over and you never know what JD may have up his sleeve.

So the Tigers apparently can't get Scherzer to agree to an extension and it has been floated to the other GMs that he can be had via trade.

Ignoring what prospects the Rangers would have to give up and what each might cost, who would you rather see the Rangers commit big money to, Scherzer or Price?

If given the choice neither of them.

Scherzer would probably be cheaper. Probably. But I think Price the better pitcher IMO.

I'd rather the rangers not give some of these asinine deals were seeing.

part of me agrees with you but i still want a play-off caliber team and what we have right now doesn't seem competitive offensively even with last year's team. we need at least one more offensive player

I heard price would agree to an extension if traded

The Rangers had the 11th highest payroll in baseball at the start of the 2013 season and moved into the top 10 with the two trades at the deadline. Not bad. But they've been 3rd and 5th in attendance over the last two seasons and the DFW Metroplex is the 4th largest market in the league. So while payroll isn't the end-all measure of success and it's certainly not smart to flush away money on awful contracts, it does seem that the payroll doesn't quite measure up to where it could conceivably rank. Not saying I think our payroll has to be top-5 at all, but I do understand where he's coming from with that question.

Attendance and revenue are not the same thing though. Where did Texas rank in overall revenue including gate receipts?

Stop lieing to yourself lol

No I'm serious. If pitching was a desperate need here then sure but they'll both be seeking 150-175 million and I'm just not sure I'd do that for them given the amount of good pitching and depth they have there.

C'mon they give us one of the best 1-2s in baseball

If money and budget wasn't much of an issue it's a different story. But I will say that are these pitchers worth giving up a ton of highly touted prospects we have and dishing out 150 million? Right now my thought is no given the pitching this team has. I'm not saying I wouldn't love to have them but in a real business sense I'd pass.

I agree with you. They would both be excellent additions to the roster, but are both considered luxuries as Texas' need for the the first time in decades is offense.

Mariners signed Corey Hart, which would seem to mean that Morales won't be back with them. Not sure if that affects their pursuit of Choo, but I'm guessing it wouldn't.

That and the Kemp announcement, something is delaying Choo's announcement. Time for Terps to chime in with anything he knows from his scout friend.

I really, really, really want the Rangers to sign Choo because he is what the Rangers have sorely lacked for some time, an absolute on-base machine with solid speed and 15-20 HR power. In other words, the ideal leadoff hitter to get on base for Fielder and Beltre. But I'm sorry, $22 Million a year for him is insane. I'm glad JD is smart enough not to give in to such a ridiculous demand. I hope no one else does either and he is forced to lower his asking price. I think the Rangers love him and he loves the Rangers, so the fit is a great one in those terms. We just the market to make Boras come to his senses.
