So to totally reshash. I slept on it and thought again about Kemp. His shoulder worries me something fierce. He relied totally on his athleticism to be dominate. To me it's not that different from Ellsbury now. He will be really good when on the field, but you just do not know how much time he will make it on the field. For that I would pass and go a safer route.

Also this article about his ankle, which had no surgery...could be a ticking time bomb.

To put this another way. Do you guys remember Grady Sizemore? A guy done in by microfracture...Weigh the risks.

the two shoulder surgeries are concerning, and a ankle injury that needed surgery. He wouldn't be able to do a full workout for anyone right now, because he's recovering on a rehab program

That's the fear for me, we sign a deal that big without being able to see him at 100%
I would assume Physicans and Therapists would hammer out as much as they could, what kind of recovery is expected.

Even if they say, 100% recovery, how long before the shoulder develops arthritis for example... man, hard to see JD doing this

how about 5 mill a year, lol

Will be interesting to watch. He can be what we're needing or a disaster. Hope it will meet our need if it happens. JD must know more than what the articles reveal. Can't imagine him doing this otherwise. Hope for the best.

B/R predicting Red Sox to sign Kemp. Not a very good bet coming from them.

They did just lose a player that relies heavily on athleticism and has a checkered bill of health.

It might well depend on what the Dodgers are willing to eat. If they take on a significant amount of his salary, or give us an additional player/pick then maybe the risk-reward improves.

I certainly understand anyone having concerns about him. I sure do.

I don't disagree with Evan. All about strategy and you don't have to make a splash this week to cap off what's been a successful off season so far. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Texas was quiet and didn't do anything this week.

Given his injury history the last few years I'm weary even if the Dodgers give a good chunk back. We'd still be owing him about 100 million. To me that's a risk that may not be worth taking. I agree this team needs to be super aggressive after last seasons pathetic offensive output but it's better to be smart than stupid.

Just to break up Kemp talk....what's everyone's opinion of trying to trade for Chase Headley?

He's a switch hitter that can play solid LF, and plays great D at 3B, which would be nice to give Beltre more time off his hamstring. He had a decent year last year and an exceptional year in 2012, but it's not unreasonable to expect his numbers to improve when he leaves cavernous petco.

He is entering his final arb eligible year, I think, which sucks but might mean the Padres would be willing to move him. . . Just a thought

I hope there's not a single poster here who disagrees with your last sentence.

The more I think about Kemp, I concur, there is just too much downside. If we got him for free and he can't play or produce, then it matters not we didn't have any investment bc we still needed a big bat.

Successful offseason so far? You have a very liberal interpretation of the word successful. We've lost Ian Kinsler, Craig Gentry, Nelson Cruz, AJ Pierzynski, Joe Nathan, and Josh Lindblom and gained Prince Fielder, JP Arencibia, and Michael Choice. We've lost both offense and defense. Even if you somehow believe Prince Fielder can provide the total combined offense of Kinsler and Cruz (which he can't), there is no way to spin Arencibia + Choice as increased offensive output over Pierzynski + Gentry. We lost our closer and a fill-in starter/bullpen guy and added no one.

The offseason for sure can still be a success with time left to sign/trade for some real offense. But to call it "successful" to this point is beyond optimistic.

I would like to see us bolster our pitching at AA and above. We have some at the lower levels. So if we do make any other trades for major league ready talent and get additional minor leaguers I hope it is in the pitching area.
