Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC now NHL announces Commissioner Bettman upholds 10-game ban for Patrick Kaleta. He has one week to decide to appeal to arbitrator

Color me shocked.

Speaking even outside the context of this specific instance, the NHL has shown a massive reluctance (to put it nicely) to ever publicly denounce anything that their officials do.

The only instance I can think of is dropping Raffi's suspension from 25 to 21, though even then they waited until the POs were over to make the decision.

I hope Kaleta & other players take this punishment for reckless actions a lot more serious now.

but the Torres susp. reduction was before the new cba which now has independant 3rd party arbitration/appeal so i was thinking ... who knows ... maybe it gets reduced to 5 games to avoid the whole process of an independent final appeal ... I didnt know whether they would want their "suspension procedures/process" challenged by an outsider ... looks like they are not afraid of it afterall :noidea:

here is the 19 page bettman ruling

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/pdfs/Kaleta_Patrick - Decision on Appeal - Oct. 24, 2013.pdf

legalese ... as Ive seen on on twitter, footnote 1 can be an indication that they know the independent appeal is coming

Definitely a huge pile of legalese in there. I'm not a lawyer either, but the league seems to be nit-picking on the exact wording of the relevant portions of the CBA instead of the what seems to be the intent of the relevant passage.

I'm interested to see if they appeal to the arbitrator at this point. It might not get him back on the ice early, but it could at least get him some (or all) of his lost salary back.

I still though didn't find some of the league's arguments compelling though. Most especially the argument that the Sutton hit on Ponikarovsky (which received only 8 games despite Sutton's almost identical length rap sheet) as an appropriate comparison.

Just watching LeBrun on TSN - He stated that Shanny did contact Scott after the altercation with Kessel and essentially informed him that he was "on notice". I have to think that is likely to factor into the suspension length for Big Bad John.

And as long as Shanny calls everyone who does something close to the line, there is no problem with this.

And if he doesn't - it shouldn't factor into the suspension at all.

There should be some discipline for the cross check to the head on Hertl... But the hit on Wingels shouldn't be anything outside of the game, IMO.

These suspensions sure are a deterrent, eh? :L

Ya know thats a great point Higgy.

Suspensions dont seem to making any changes here. We are still seeing the same if not more amounts of headshots and hits to the back.

Not sure what the answer is but giving a guy like Scott 5 or 10 or perhaps Chara from what I seen posted a few ago 5 or 10 does not seem to be working. What to do? Go 20+ on these guys?

I think a matching fine should accompany the major assaults. if for example Scott gets 10 games suspension thats a forfeit of $91K he should be fined $91K on TOP of that. you start getting them in the book like that. maybe just maybe they will see some change.

Not disagreeing that maybe that's what it would take...but that would also take a new CBA. League doesn't have the power to impose that kind of penalty.

Wingels was a total head shot.

We all know how you feel about pussification of the NHL, but like the rules or not that hit was a blatant violation.
