Has anyone else besides me noticed a change in Bill Meltzer's writing in terms of the avoidance of criticism of management or opinions that could be considered somewhat controversial regarding the Flyers, since he started writing for them instead of just about them? I used to look forward to his honest, insightful analysis. Now his work reads like he's just another team mouthpiece. Shame.

I wouldn't go quite as far and say he's just another team mouthpiece. At least for me, he doesn't seem to be overly 'cheerleader-y' to make up a term. I recognize that may have some bias coming from me because I like what they've done for the most part. But I definitely agree that he doesn't get nearly as close to "the line" as he used to. Understandably so I guess, but definitely sucks for us haha.

Do you have an Athletic subscription? I really like Charlie O'Connor's work too. Definitely gets a little stat heavy (and extremely wordy) at times, but I like his stuff.

Besides being that tall he had 50 goals in 65 games he can put the puck in the net.

Tied for 5th in goals scored in the OHL

He was #10 on the 25 under 25 list for broadstreethockey.com.
I didn't want to post the link if somebody else does that around here.

As you can probably guess, I take issue with the "i'm not sure if they're any better". That's garbage IMO. You can argue about how much better they are, but they are clearly better.

Out: Macdonald, Lehtera, Weiss, Varone, Knight, Gudas, Simmonds, Hartman, Bailey
In: Hayes, Niskanen, Braun, Pitlick

In terms of personnel, you replaced

Lehtera/Varone/Knight --> Hayes - This is a massive upgrade. Maybe it's not a 'put them over the top' move. But it's a huge upgrade.

MacDonald --> Braun - At worst, this is a push.

Gudas --> Niskanen - Niskanen played 25 minutes a night on a cup winning team a year ago. This is a big upgrade too.
Simmonds/Hartman/Bailey/Weiss --> Pitlick - Simmonds at his best, this is a decent sized downgrade. But Pitlick is better than the rest of those guys. And was only 18 points off Simmonds' pace last year.

I read that Pitlick had wrist surgery and is out 4 weeks (will miss all of camp). Does that open the door for another young guy? I don't see Frost or Farabee on a 4th line, but maybe Rubstov, Vorbyev or NAK gets a shot.

In multiple articles ive read about Washington they had Gudas as an upgrade over Nisky.

I think Vorobyev has some 4th line experience and of those players you mentioned he would be the pick. Although mentioned in today's posts Ratcliffe is 6"6" big enough to play 4th line and may gain some much needed NHL experience.
