Or Broncos of old. You know where Kubiak played and got his coaching chops, won 2 SBs, churned out RB after RB.

I just didn't think the line was able to handle 7 or 8 in the box. Its a very good line I see.

I don't give one shit who wins this game, but how was that not targeting under the new rules?

I guess what I'm saying is, I think the new targeting rule is completely idiotic. But it seems like there literally is no line drawn anywhere. It's just like referees are allowed to decide whether or not they feel like calling it.

So sick and tired of that shit.
There is no targeting rule in the NFL, that's a college rule.

I was impressed with Simian (sp)
He played pretty well against one of the top defenses.

All those saying Denver can't make the playoffs, may have to start back tracking now.

I don't disagree but if the NFL is very serious about these new concussion rules then I would say the Panthers should at least get a warning that next time it will cost them. He did not look good at all and so to leave him in like that without a team doctor getting the chance to really check him out is just crazy.

If they are truly serious, they will start throwing flags when they are warranted.

Or Broncos of old. You know where Kubiak played and got his coaching chops, won 2 SBs, churned out RB after RB.

And what he did in Houston too. Lots of injuries and guys like Ward, Ben Tate, Forsett would just come in and go for 5-6 yards a carry. Slaton was amazing before getting hurt. Ron Dayne looked like a quality back. And Foster was unstoppable (granted hurt last year but struggling those first few games the year that they no longer had Kubiak).

I didn't care either way. I was split. I wanted them to win due to my weekly office pool pickem. A part of me was hoping they would cover then another part of me was hoping Denver would pull it out just because the Panthers are in the Saints division. I don't get the hate for Cam. Never have and never will.
Start with the stolen laptop, and then you have the rumors of his dad shopping him around to different schools after he left Florida. Won a National Championship at Auburn, a lot of people don't like Auburn. Then you get all the celebrating which some people find over the top, especially when he was doing his Superman thing at the end of blowout losses. Then of course you have the towel on the head, pouting look he would give when the Panthers were losing.

Then you get to last year, when the Panthers are really winning like crazy and he's the league MVP, and you have all the dancing and celebrating and comments like, "if you don't like it, stop me." So then Denver does in the Super Bowl and he acts like a bitch; falls to the ground at the end of the game, pouts his way through a press conference, then storms out when he overhears what Chris Harris is saying. It's the classic case of you can dish it out but you can't take it, and people don't like that. If you want to celebrate the good times, you have to stand in there and take your lumps in the bad times.

Plus you've got the whole jumping away from the fumble in the Super Bowl which really looked like a give up play, like this game isn't important enough for me to fight for the ball. You add all these things up, and you don't understand why people don't like him? I mean, it's fine if none of that bothers you, but really, you can't see how that would rub people the wrong way?

I don't think that should happen, remember the doctor who's supposed to make that call is independent. It's the same as saying the Panthers should get a warning since the refs didn't stop the game to have him checked out.

Honestly that just shows how far they have to go. I mean they have a neurologist in the booth just for that purpose, watching the game on TV (so he won't be distracted by injuries and things on the sidelines), and with the ability to call a medical timeout. If not there... When?

It's not called "targeting rule" in the NFL, but they did clarify what they meant from last year:

For safety reasons, the Committee believes that crown-of-the-helmet hits by defenders that were previously legal because the defender did not line up the runner should be illegal regardless of whether the defender lines up the runner prior to making contact. When the rule was first implemented, game officials were instructed to look for three elements for interpreting the rule for initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet:

  • The player must line up his opponent
  • He must lower his head
  • He must make forcible contact with the crown of the helmet.
Game officials will be instructed to call fouls when a defender lowers his head and makes forcible contact with the crown of his helmet on a runner outside the tackle box. The line-up requirement will still apply to a runner, since in many instances that player ducks his head to protect himself from impending contact by a defender, rather than to deliver a blow.

(Bolded emphasis added)

That, to me, doesn't sound like there's much room for interpretation. If a runner, ANY runner, is outside the tackle box and the defender hits him with the crown of the helmet, it's supposed to be a PF. But again, if the Refs aren't going to call it, then I don't blame the defenders.

I'm hoping one day the NFL will reconsider auto 1st down penalties on certain call's ... I mean it can be 4th and 85 and you can get an illegal contact penalty and it's an auto 1st down ... And you NEVER know when they're gonna make that call , sometimes it's so tick tack ...
So much this, and I've said it long before last night. I've never understood why a 5 yard defensive penalty is an automatic first down. Give them the 5 yards and let them try the down again. But the NFL loves offense so I doubt it will ever change.

Good points. I really don't put much into who football players are as people in college especially. I watch them for being exciting football players, not because they maybe sexually assaulted a trainer in college.

And I have no problem with them being emotional, or enjoying winning and playing well. No problem if they hate losing either. My friends are where I care about those things.

I can see how people don't like that sure, but I think we put too much belief into football players that they are hero's, that they are role models, etc.

The 1st paragraph deals with him as a kid and lists reasons to dislike his dbag father.

The 3rd paragraph deals with his toughness and competitiveness. I don't think either is in question if you objectively look at his game.

The 2nd paragraph is what it's all about. I personally don't dislike him (or like him per say). He's a great QB though.

I don't think it will either with where offenses are going. The only problem is does the punishment fit the crime then? If you are getting beat on a route on that play and grab the WR and just tackle him before the QB throws the ball, the most that team gets is a 5 yard penalty and a new play then. You just used your "go to" play that gives you your best chance of converting, you lost the opportunity to make a monster game changing play and now are stuck in a similar situation.

One of the head shots I was speaking of.

That was the most egregious one IMO, not sure why it wasn't flagged. The Stewart hit, looked to me like he led with the shoulder but the way Cam ducked after the throw caused it to be helmet to helmet. I don't think it was intentional on Stewart's part (if it was, that would be a really stupid thing to do in that situation), and it was flagged anyway.

The other helmet to helmet hit he took in the pocket was on the Ware sack, as he was going down Miller hit him facemask to facemask. I think that was a good no-call as Ware pulling Newton down just as Miller shed the blocker caused it to be helmet to helmet. There was clearly no intent there, and well, that happens in football sometimes.

Any other helmet to helmet hits he took were as a runner, and when he's running he doesn't get protection as a qb. Really the only egregious one that the officials missed was the Marshall hit. That was bad and I'm not sure what Marshall was thinking there. I expect he'll get a pretty solid fine for that.
