Yeah, I'm in the minority with The Departed, I know. I'd still give it an 8/10, but most of his others or 9 or 10.

I'd give Wolf 8.5/10

Just me.

At least you still thought it was a good movie lol.

But I thnk the Departed is fantastic. Not only probably his best but one of the best Ive seen. Love that movie.

the only movie i have not seen is philomena:

But my top 5 in no particular order

1. Nebraska
2. 12 years a slave
3. wolf of wall street
4. american hustle
5. her(definitely the bottom of my top 5 though)

... i must say i would probably of enjoyed captain philips more if i saw it with the subtitles... LOL at me not watching it with the subtitles...

as for Gravity, i thought the movie itself was below average, and since i did not see it in theatres i was not impressed by the graphics... But none the less graphics are only that...

I know nebraska is an option for best movie, but i would actually still call it the most under-rated movie of 2013... i think it was that good, but i havent heard the hype to the same extent of some others that were listed...

Very good year for movies. Here's how I would rank them

1) 12 Years a Slave
2) Her
3) The Wolf of Wall Street
4) Gravity
5) American Hustle

Haven't seen the others but I would give an honorable mention to Fruitvale Station

I'd really like to see Ejiofor win for best actor...I've been a huge fan of his since 4 Brothers and Serenity.

And I know that most on here aren't into Shakespeare, but look at what he can do with a Hamlet soliloquy with just his face in front of the camera. He's incredible.

I thought Gravity was great not only because of the graphics, but because it was well written and unique.

I haven't seen Nebraska, I'll have to watch some of the other ones that have been nominated.

I feel the same way about The Departed. Definitely one of the best movies of the 2000s.

Have you ever seen Infernal Affairs?

While we're on the same topic who do you guys think is going to win/deserves to win best actor tomorrow.

I think Chiwetel Ejiokor deserves to win it but signs are pointing towards Matthew McConaughey taking best actor

I wouldn't mind if Christian Bale won even though I didn't like American Hustle as much as I wanted to. If Leo somehow wins I'll be happy for him but it's definitely not his best performance or most deserving at all

Can't comment on Bruce Dern...didn't get to see Nebraska

It's the original movie The Departed was "remade" or "inspired" from. It's almost as good if not better in some aspects than The Departed. Highly recommended

Yeah I'll definitely have to give a shot here sometime.

As for best actor, again my bias is definitely here with Wolf but I loved Leo there and it's a shame that the type of movie and how controversial it is he wont have a chance.

I agree with you though, while MM probably wins I think CE should get it for 12 years. I like Bale but really do not think that is even top 4 worthy.

Does anyone even know how to measure this?? I just give it to the main actor from the movie i think should be Best picture!!! Kind of like in baseball the manager of the year award generally goes to the manager from the most surprising team...

you know, the more i think about it, the more leo might sneak it out.

ejiofor isn't flashy enough for the academy to give the award to by a majority, but he'll get some votes. and a lot will go to matthew mcc. maybe enough will be undecided between those two, and say "eh, let's just vote for leo" based on his spectacular body of work.

i know the oscar isn't "supposed" to be for a body of work, but that's really what it was for sandra bullock and julia roberts, imo. dicaprio has been in some spectacular roles (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Total Eclipse, Blood Diamond, The Aviator, and on and on). Maybe this will be his time. If so, I won't complain.

I haven't seen any of these pictures. They all seem interesting but where should I start? 12 Years A Slave seems confounding.

Yeah personally I think his best performances were The Aviator, Revolutionary Road, and Blood Diamond. He should have won for The Aviator. My personal favorite performance from him is Catch Me If You Can. I thought 2012 he had his best chance to win as best supporting actor as Calvin Candie but Christoph Waltz had to one up him.

I will say though...the scene in Wolf of Wall Street where Leo is in his "drool phase" and has to crawl from the phone booth to his car...that scene alone deserves an oscar

This is not who I expect to win, but who I would give the vote to personally:

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave
Best Actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Best Actress: Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
Best Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
Best Cinematography: Gravity
Best Directing: Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street)

Thoughts:
Best Picture: is a tossup for me between Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave.
Best Actor: Once again for me it was a tossup between Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leonardo DiCaprio, but the emotion I thought that was accompanied by Chiwetel's performance made me have to lean in his direction.
Best Actress: The only two I had seen in this list were Amy Adams in American Hustle and Sandra Bullock in Gravity. There is just something about Adams that irks me, for whatever reason I was just not overly impressed with her performance in American Hustle.
Best Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender played a terrific bad guy in that movie and I think he deserves the nod. Barkhad Abdi who I had never heard of (not surprisingly) played a surprisingly likable bad guy in Captain Phillips. Jonah Hill demonstrated great versatility in Wolf, after Superbad I never would have guessed that Jonah Hill was capable of playing the roles he did in Moneyball and Wolf, I expected that he would forever be the fat guy in the comedy movies, props to him for breaking out of that mold and developing into a really solid supporting actor. Really difficult choice with this one.
Best Supporting Actress: Had to go with Jennifer Lawrence simply because I always envision her as the role she played in The Hunger Games.
Best Directing: Scorsese broke his regular mold and created a terrific movie. If not for 12 Years a Slave, Wolf would have been best picture, Leo would have won best actor and Jonah Hill may have won best supporting actor.

"Twelve Years a Slave" here...

Saw somewhere that there are over 6K voters in the Academy and the breakdown on such demographics is that over 60% of the voters are old white guys in their early 60's.

Keep that in mind when watching tonite.

BTW..

Matthew Mac should win the "Best Actor" award...great body of work last year.
