This the same guy who claims moneyball is a sham because the A's don't win in the playoffs, yet in Moneyball Beane basically says that his strategies are to for long term building in getting to the playoffs, and not fpr winning in the playoffs since that's more of a 'who gets hot at the right time thing'....so he's very critical of it yet it appears he doesn't understand what it's meant for...and he's widely respected why again?

So the A's arent setting up to win in the playoffs? Just hoping to get hot? Well i guess its working....they are making the playoffs, but keep getting bounced by detroit. Moneyball is a sham......until moneyball wins a WS, its a sham.....if you cant afford to pay players, sell or move the team. But i guess if dayton moore thinks it feels like winning the WS just because they had a winning season with no playoffs, i guess that makes beane feel even that much better. Imagine IF the royals JUST made the playoffs.....dayton moore would go nuts!

The mouse in your brain having trouble finding the cheese today? Exactly how many titles has Miggy led the tigers to?

None, but at least they make it to the WS.......they have a chance.....the tigers end any chances the A's have every year they meet......the last 3 times? The late 80's and early 90's A's wouldnt had let that happen.

Plus detroit had 3 million fans this year.....how many did the A's have? Alot of empty seats when i see them in reg season....put a team the fans want to see...u draw more fans....more fans means more money....just like making a deep playoff run is money in the pocket. The A's will NEVER win a WS with moneyball.....what have they won? ONE postseason series?

Good point.......no...wait a minute. No it is not. How is this relevant to this conversation. Are you implying that now the Detroit fans are responsible for Miggy winning the MVP? Wheel is turning slow again hip-hop. feed that mouse!

Payroll is a small part of moneyball...if you think moneyball is merely just winning while keeping a payroll low, I'd suggest you do some more research on it.

If you want an example of a team that championships with moneyball concepts: Red Sox

Well, I believe making the playoffs should be a factor but not a huge factor. I think 3% makes sense because it is not going to significantly change anything. It only becomes a factor in close races. If u think it is less important then in your calculations don't use it as much. The percentages you use are always going to be based on your preference. And therefore it will be arbitrary for everyone else.

I chose 1 point instead of 3 for the exact same reason. Now they're tied. So what's the argument for 3 instead of 1?

I believe we dont need voters at all... we just need to find the right mathematical formula... have not found the perfect one but i do think i have a good one... Maybe someone wiser than me has a better one... But i do believe voters dont always make the correct pick... This includes HOF...

Here's the thing though... just because something is being expressed numerically doesn't mean that it is statistically valid.

I particularly like hip-hop's quote about not getting involved before his meandering diatribe. I have to give you and Element credit for trying to help educate these kids. I have to tell you, though, that it is not an easy task. They don't read entire posts and have great difficulty comprehending what they do read. The worst part about
the debate is they get less intelligible the more their numbers grow.
.

Thank you...I try. I enjoy good baseball debates from both sides, whether it be picking someone's brain on their thought process or sharing some things I've picked up along the way. I was on the ESPN boards for a good 10-11 years, so I've come across some really good posters (some of whom post here), and some lousy ones....you take the good with the bad.

Element posted on ESPN too, though he mostly posted on the Pirates board (and other Pittsburgh team boards, I guess).

There were a lot of good ESPN posters that I haven't seen post since robust.

FanSinceRupe
Enkidu
Jadewarrior (I think he posted on TheFanatic for a bit)
CursedClevelander
EC_Bias
GashouseGang1934
KalineCountry

And many others

Interesting...I don't remember him from ESPN, but I do come across him sometimes on the politics and general forum here.

Speaking of which, where the hell did Smarther go...haven't seen him in a good month or two.

I don't know, I was wondering the same thing. Seels posted on here once or twice and disappeared too.

Agreed, I try to learn something from even the worst of posters. Since I learned a long time ago that I don't know everything, no opinion I have is set in stone. Countless times I have been adamant about a point and have been swayed. This isn't one of those times.

Classic line. With you approval I may borrow it.

Speaking of classic, the situation in your provincial capital is providing non-stop entertainment.

This gives a decent enough explanation I think. The rules regarding league structure, drafts, player retention and roster management and so on and so forth are different from league to league but that's the basic idea.

Simulation leagues put owners in complete control - USATODAY.com

The league I play in is a full 162 games, 30 teams and 43 man rosters, so almost every player that played in 2012 was on a team in 2013. And you're limited by real-life playing time (sub-140 game batters get 120% of real-life PAs and 140+ game batters get their real-life # of games, relievers get 120% of innings, sub-30 start starters get (real-life starts + 4) up to 30 and 30+ start pitchers get their real-life # of starts) and real-life defensive positions. So you can see how a guy like Don Kelly who's eligible at 6 different positions can be helpful in filling out playing time for teams no matter whether they're contending now or rebuilding.

And as a side note we finally won the World Series this year after 8 seasons of losing, mostly to ESPN fantasy employees. Which was way more exciting for me than it should have been.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Not really what I was expecting. But I see how DK could be of service. I like that.

I have explained it to you 5 times, if you dont want to read the entire post then thats ok, but your fixated on something that has very little importance... Not sure if you are trying to be an asshole or if you just are one!!

I said that if they find the right mathematical formula... therefore your wise comment that it may not be statistically valid is irrelevant...
