The NFL doesn't know what a catch is - and at what point is the WR "allowed" to no longer have the ball? He got 2 feet in, a knee was down, he was out of bounds, and it wasn't until after all of that the guy hit the ball out...at some point...the play is dead.

TD catches need to be a bit more like TD runs....a runner crosses the plan, and it's a TD. For a receive, he needs to catch the ball, have possession, with 2 feet in bounds...at THAT point, he has established possession and broke the plane - TD. I get the rule being a bit different in the field of play where you can still advance the ball. In the endzone, there is no advancement, or fumble, opportunity - so, IMO, the play should end as soon as the former instance occurs.
What about making a football move? I guess I thought it was a non-catch because he leaped and left the field of play, and just like at the sidelines if you jump and leave the field of play, you have to get two feet down and possess the ball to the ground and not let it move around until you come to a complete stop. If Chase had finished moving on the ground and was lying still before Milano punched the ball out, then I think it should have been a TD. I guess I just didn't see it that way. Two feet in, go to the ground, stop moving, play is over.

I know a lot of Bengals fans are upset about it, but I didn't see it as a catch.

The issue here - is - many WR's slide out of bound and eventually "lose" the ball, and it's still a catch. He had possession, bobbled, regained it, with 2 feet down, fell out of bounds, knee down, body down - THEN Milano punches the ball out...IMO - that's a catch.

Even if not - I have 2 thoughts on this process regardless of the outcome on this specific play:

1 - once the players leave the field - the defensive guy should not be allowed to punch the ball out. Why are we allowing a play to "continue" out of bounds? Either they are out of the field of play, or they are not. If they are going to allow the defensive guy to continue to rip at the ball, then there needs to be a very specific moment in which anyone could point to and say "Play is dead here" it's either a catch at that point, or not....

2 - Biggest issue I have is with the catch rule in the endzone. The reason you have the "through the catch" rule in the field of play is because if you called everything a catch, then all of those loose balls would be fumbles. There would be, like, 6 fumbles a game. Can't have that. However, in the endzone, the reason the runner scores as soon as he breaks the barrier/plane is because you can't advance a ball or fumble in the endzone once that play is complete...in the spirt of the fact that you can't advance or fumble - a receiver who has 2 feet (or knee, or hip, whatever) with clear possession of the ball is considered to score with these 2 conditions met. There is no need to continue "through" the catch, because at that point, the play should be ruled dead - no fumble, no advancement is possible - so there is no need for the additional rule as stated on the field of play. That is why I think the endzone catch rule needs updated to better reflect as a ball carrier - they've met the conditions - continuing through is a moot point in the endzone because when condition 1 and 2 are met, the play should be considered complete.

I am not disagreeing with you that they should rewrite this rule. I think it is stupid. However, that is the way the rule is written and they uphold this all the time. Based on the rule, I think the refs got it right.

Now the Josh Allen "forward pass" that was not a fumble was complete bullshit. His arm never even approached going forward.

Good thing he ended up at LSU - or he's be just another OSU QB in the NFL

;)

Had he stayed at Ohio State not sure he's where he's at today. He style of play didn't fit with the Buckeyes. Glad he ended up at LSU and was able to show everyone how damn good he is. I'll always been a fan.

I just feel they allowed the "extra" from Milano to play into that call - when he had the ball, with 2 feet in and did survive the ground. He didn't survive Milano - missed where they also had to survive the defender as well...that is where I disagree with how they called the rule.

Yes - though - the rule itself should be changed.

Yes - his arm was hit and he lost control of that ball before it went forward...no doubt....

It would be interesting - from what I remember, he was neck and neck to start that year, but then got hurt. Haskins took over and the rest is history.

But, you are right - OSU has always been more about mobile QB's and less about pocket guys. Joe can move, but he's not a mobile QB.

I just like that when he left Ohio State there was no ill will. Sometimes when players leave a program they don't have anything good to say.
