Me personally I wasn't expecting all the signings they've made this year (figured it would be next) but can't say I'm unhappy with who they've signed. I'm guessing the front office is worried about attendance and so made a splash for that reason to help quiet a few rumblings. Now that they've went this far why not get one or two more pieces to make them at least a .500 team to give the fans even more hope. If they agree to expanded playoffs that will keep more fans interested longer considering Atlanta only won 88 games last year...

More butts in the seats equals more money to spend on players/player development/player scouting and more profit to invest in other things like the stadium to help attract more fans...
I think they are very close to being a .500 club right now with the additions they have made plus Jung, and the improvements that seem likely for the young pitchers.

They possibly could be, I haven't seen a schedule yet so will reserve judgement until then and the other teams have more set rosters to peruse...

Overall the young pitchers didn't do that bad a job last year there were 5 other teams who won more games and their team ERAs were higher As long as that keep progressing and say get their ERA down to 4.20 or 4.30 the wins for the team will come. I don't think they've filled up quite enough holes in the lineup to overcome last years ERA of 4.79 to get to .500 just yet if they don't progress, we'll see time will tell. (But they played .500 ball for about the first 40 games before it all fell apart last year, baseball can be a funny game at times) :noidea:

Since they've signed who they've signed who knows what they might be planning to do to fill any other perceived holes in the team. They could sign more FAs or make some trades with a combo of current players and a few prospects to sweeten the deal. They could do it before ST or wait till the Trade Deadline when they have a better idea as to what they currently have, I think they will do both I don't see them standing pat. At a minimum I think they will get another SP before ST and make a run at Suzuki because he will be cheaper than the more established FAs...

Money spent on Free Agency will only help you compete for so long, you still have to draft competently and fill in the gaps with prospects. If that doesn't happen you'll never get to the big dance you'll end up being the perpetual bridesmaid, That same FA also makes it harder to keep the team together so the big dance window can be quite small. Some teams waste the opportunity by constantly playing musical players and never filling all the holes on the roster to make the run, "next year" becomes the common catchphrase...
i agree

Just not having Arihara, Folty and for the most part Lyles should help. I think even if they had to go with Alexy and Otto all year they would be better off than last year, rotation-wise that is.

Maybe they can get Kershaw to sign here. Kershaw on a two or three year deal would help now and serve as a rotation spot holder for Owen White.

I know this has been mentioned but haven't seen the article before now...

When I first read about Harris moving to the OF it was insinuated that he is doing so to create a future spot at 1B on the Rangers for Blaine Crim.

I wouldn't be against that for the right terms/money but for some reason I have this nagging little doubt in the back of my head about it...

I know he's supposedly throwing again but :noidea: we don't need another Prince Fielder...

Lyles may surprise some people this year. And we may yet still sign him

Sigh, MLB

Major League Baseball submitted a proposal to the players association Thursday on core economics for a new central bargaining agreement. Good and bad news:
Good: The sides talked for the first time since Dec. 2. Encouraging!

Bad: Players weren’t happy with the proposal at all. But at least it’s a start?
The distance between the two sides is large, according to our Evan Drellich, and we shouldn't expect spring training to start on time. At this rate, it’s hard to hope the season starts on time, either.

It’s hard to tell which of the core issues are close to agreement right now — minimum salaries, draft tweaks, arbitration changes, service-time manipulation and the competitive-balance tax are all items where the sides are still miles apart.

It goes without saying that losing games would be bad for baseball. Those around for 1994 and 1995 can attest to how dire the sport’s future felt then. It is in a stronger place than it was before that work stoppage, but in a landscape where football is king and basketball’s popularity continues to swell, it’s hard to find silver linings in baseball slipping away, even by a few inches.

Don’t lose too much hope, though: as Drellich’s story points out, these issues are often solved at the last minute. No follow-up meeting is scheduled for now, though.

He could if he can pitch like he did in short increments last year, for most of the upcoming season. For a lot of last year though he was awful, and we will be better off without those kind of starts.

Yes you could easily say nicely he had an up and down year. But it does seem without verification that he ended up a little better.
No world beater for sure but he are the innings

Jeff Wilson and Jon Moore had Josh Smith on their podcast this morning. They started off discussing what position he will play. When they introduced him they asked if he wanted to be referred to as a SS or what. He said just get him in the lineup and he will play wherever.

They asked him what impressed him first about the organization when he came over. He mentioned how hard everyone played and how much energy everyone seemed to have. He said he feels blessed to be in the organization.

Jeff Wilson says JD has told Josh Smith that he has a place in the team's future.

Every time Jeff Wilson and Jon Moore have a young prospect on their podcast they are impressed with the makeup of those guys. The organization has done a great job accumulating really good people who are also really good players.

I just remembered that Arihara is still part of the organization at AAA, so we might see him again this year... :noidea:
