Calhoun COULD still produce, no argument but we have waited for 5 seasons and somehow there is always something that has cost us most of every season so it’s like we have to start over again every season. Canha can play multiple positions like 1B and all 3 OF positions. Freeman has always produced and hits both RH and LH pitchers well. Taylor ain’t leaving the Dodgers. Hell it’s unlikely Freeman leaves Atl.
I like Canha, his OBP and his ability to play multiple positions including CF.
I think he would be a great pick up.
Canha and Schwarber(LF) would be nice additions.

Schwarber and Boston have a mutual option of $11.5M for 2022 which will be probably picked and they are already discussing an extension. I like him too

They may re sign him to a longer contract but i don’t think he accepts a 1 year $11 million deal.
He’s at a good age to get some extra length and possible a little more money as well. Coming off an amazing season like that i am 90% certain he won’t accept the one year option.
If he does, he’s not very intelligent

i agree which is why the RedSox are and he are already talking about a multi-year extension

If the Rangers sign a hitter or two this offseason I am not interested in signing a 33 year-old corner player who is slashing .237/.363/.415.

So count me out on Canha. He is trending toward something like .220/.325/.380 in 2023.

Zak Kent and Owen White both pitch in the minors today. Also, Kevin Gowdy, the best pitcher we got back for Crouse and Gibson, will pitch today.

Kent seems to have hit a wall lately.

Corner players are where it’s at for players as they age. But he does play CF a lot so wouldn’t consider him a corner player exclusively. I think he has another year or 2 of playing some CF 1/3 of the time. Also don’t think he will see a huge downturn in OBP. I like him on a 2-3 year deal.
His OBP would be very helpful.

His numbers just don't impress me. I want money spent for more than his stat line shows.

He seems to already be in a downturn. That most likely continues as he approaches his mid 30s.

I would agree if he wasn’t in amazing shape. Also don’t see any reason his OBP would drop below .350. I think OBP with some pop is one of the best players to go after. Also shouldn’t be super expensive. He’s one of those valuable players that probably gets over looked because he doesn’t hit for a high avg or big big power but you have to look closer at how much value he brings to the table.
If you look at his WRC+ he’s sandwiched between players like Yoan Moncada Manny Machado and Salvador Perez Paul Goldschmidt.
In other words he’s one of the top 50 players.

He is ranked in the top 20 Free Agents for 2022

With another re-build year 2022, I want to see more of Lowe,Peters and Leody. To DFA these guys and replace with high dollar FA's could be a huge mistake. SS and catcher is needed if price is right. If Peters and Leody works out with Adolis in RF, our OF is in good shape.
If they don't work out 2022, then do what is necessary. Patience is a virtue that is on our side.

Not thinking vets on a 2-3 year contract is bear bet for future. Maybe pitching to eat some innings but no to position players as we are still in a rebuild even next year. Jung will likely not even start year on 25. Once he shows up the race is on

That is probably why we differ so much. I have never been that taken with OBP as a major way of measuring a player's worth.

The other major difference we have, which makes us see Canha differently, is that I am more concerned with how a potential acquisition will perform in 2024-26. You seem to be a lot more focused on being much better in 2022 than I am.

Yeah, same here. I am not even wanting starting pitching on 2 to 3 year deals.

so if we go pitching what are you looking for?
I think our system is capable of producing high quality pitchers who could fit into positions 2 through 5 in the rotation of a championship caliber team. Producing an ace is certainly not a given though. Although, if Leiter became an ace I certainly would not be shocked.

The safest way to acquire an ace would be to make a Cliff Lee type trade when we see the rest of the team is ready to make a deep run. That would be a mid-season type acquisition for what would appear to be the final piece of the puzzle.

If they decide to go after a free agent or make a major trade for a budding ace on another team, then that's fine. If it was left up to me, I would spend my money on hitters and use some prospects down the road to trade for an ace.
