If Seattle offered him 18.5 that’s and pretty dam close to the 20 he’s looking for, not sure why he would hold out over 1.5 when he could easily make that up with endorsements etc... He’s talking about a short term deal now, like 1 or 2 years so he can hit the market again ... He’s not really showing he cares about winning right now, it’s all about hitting the open market to him.... Bummer....

I'm reading that its more complicated than that. Seattle is offering something like - 1 year $13.5 million for a short deal or 5 years 90 million for a longer deal. Also, who knows what the guaranteed money looks like in any offers.

As for winning - its not like Seattle is the only option he has.

Baltimore - $6.5 million
Green Bay - $12.4 million
New Orleans - $13.3 million
San Francisco - $15.3 million
New England - $10.7 million
Kansas City - $3.2 million
Seattle - $20.4 million
Buffalo - $33.3 million
Houston - $39.9 million
Minnesota - $11.7 million
Philadelphia - $33.7 million
Los Angeles Rams - $18.7 million
Tennessee - $27.4 million

Clowney can play both 4-3 DE and 3-4 LB, so he isn't really restricted by defensive philosophy. There's still a lot of teams who ended with at least 9 wins and have money they can invest in someone like Clowney if they so chose - and if the Seahawks are offering a below franchise tag price for a short term deal - then it really doesn't hurt Clowney to see if he can't get someone to sweeten the pot a little. He's really got about a month before he needs to feel some pressure to sign somewhere.

Seahawks dont have the cap space for a 18.5 million hit they are down to 18.3 million and That doesn’t account for the signings of free agents Bruce Irvin, Brandon Shell, Cedric Ogbuehi, Luke Willson and Chance Warmack. They also need 5 million to sign their draft picks at the least.

the cap only jumping 10 million tied the Hawks hands a little. Hawks need to hit on 60-70% of their draft this season.

Yes we know they will release players and free up money and some of those releases could be a gut punch to many of the fans. They will lose well liked and talented players.

in that case he had a career year as a rotation player getting 8.5 sacks last season.

I have to correct my comment on Bruce Irvin being a rotational player. I read that he played 55% of Carolina's defensive snaps and didn't realize he missed 3 games, so I don't think that total is adjusted based on games played. I'm too lazy to calculate what the percentage really was, but I'd assume it's more like 70% or so. 8.5 sacks over 608 snaps is still pretty solid though.

Rumors indicate they've offered Clowney a one year contract around $18m if I recall correctly and he's considering taking a one year deal and hitting the open market next year when his value will be higher. The front office must believe that they'd somehow be able to free up space to sign him.

As a biased Seahawks fan I think it might be better in Clowney's interest to take a one year deal. Teams will have more money to spend next year and I think if plays a full year he can prove his value better than he did in 2019.

I would be surprised if Griffen signs before Clowney. They're probably going to wait until Clowney signs somewhere and then market Griffen as the best available pass rusher.

Although this could be one of the many times a comment of mine is quoted in the future proving I'm wrong.

That is exactly the game, Clowney is being patient until all the available prass rushers are signed and sooner or later a team will cave in and give the deal close to what he is looking for.

Not to many teams left with Money to spend on a 20 Million dollar player. Think about that payday. Many teams can not absorb such a big hit on someone who may not play 16 games and who has never been a huge sack guy.

I hope Clowney comes back and we land Griffen! i would feel much better if that happens.

Don't forget Clowney wants to play for a contender so that takes a lot of teams off his list. I'm fine if he takes Seattle's one yr deal.

I think he would take 20 million on a loser over 18 million on a "maybe" winner. Thing is no one so far has offered him his 20-21 million he was shooting for.

You could be right but then his "I want to play for a winner" was BS, but so be it if he does. Teams probably got turned off by the amount he wants plus his low sack total and injury history which I can't blame teams for not ponying up the money. I'm thinking he takes a 1yr deal here or somewhere else and try again next year for a big payday.

The problem with that is not so much the winner or loser but how many times have we seen a player take the big contract on a bad team then the team changes coaches/GM then trades away or cuts the player with the largest contract? It is hard to look good as a player on a bad team. Playing on a team that wins games and goes to the playoffs appears more valuable

Will supposedly he has a better offer then that from the Seahawks.

I'm thinking Seattle has the best offer or he would have signed by now if some team offered him the 20mil he's looking for.

No doubt the off season hasn’t worked out for Clowney liked he hoped.
