Yeah I've never been a big fan of it. But at the same time, look at it from the other angle. It's a way of rewarding a team for the exact reason you mention. Wouldn't really be fair if the team was by far the best in the league, and the only reason they suck is because their team is decimated.
But the players who earned the accolades are no longer there. You are rewarding the schlubs who where left behind.

Just stumbled across this website and thought it was an interesting read - San Francisco Giants – 2018 UTR Organizational All-Stars
I should note, though, that the Giants already gave up on their pick for 1st base and one of the starting pitcher, Joey Marciano, had already been converted to a reliever by the time the article was published and he has since retired (which I am sad about. I was hopeful his early dominance in his pro career would carry him to the big league roster).

Bart with a homer (10) tonight at Visalia. Hjelle with six shutout innings (2 hits).

Seth Corry with 5 shutout innings (2 hits, 7 K's) for Augusta. Seelinger 7 K's in 3 innings in relief.

Corry's ERA is down to 1.97 (!) with 12.36 K's per 9.

Hjelly is down to 2.54 and he's inducing a crazy 67.4 GB%

Bart has homered again, a solo shot (11) against the Rawhide of Visalia. Average back up to .269

DigDug is 2-3 tonight and is hitting .329 for the Rivercats.

DRod has pitched 5.2 innings of 2 hit shutout ball, 3 walks and 7 K's

Richmond FINALLY won a game (pulling within 27 games of .500). Fargas 2-3 with his 39th stolen base. Bryce Johnson is 2-5 and is hitting .292 since coming up from San Jose. Adon with his 14th save (and two K's).

Jesus, I haven't really been following AAA and AA this year because all of the exciting guys are in the lower minors, but my god I didn't know things were that bad in Richmond. They are definitely the most talent-deprived team in the system.

If the team they were promoted to don't make the post-season, they will likely be back with their old team for the playoffs.

I looked up roster movement for this team and, so far, only two guys have been promoted (Tyler Flores and Simon Whiteman), both to Augusta. There have been 6 guys demoted to the AZL, two released and, now, one traded.

My concern description was theoretical, not specific. But the second half team is typically more like the playoff team than the first half team. So to reward performance of the first half team just doesn’t hold a lot of logic, imho.

I knew that it was theoretical. It just made me wonder how much promotion has gone on with this team. I do wonder if we'll see many more promoted this next week or two.

The Sacramento River Cats are currently leading their division and are looking at a playoff appearance.

The San Jose Giants have been on a tear lately and are sniffing a playoff berth, just a half game out right now.

The Augusta GreenJackets are currently leading the second half and are on track for a playoff berth.

The Salem-Kiezer Volcanoes have clinched a playoff appearance.

The AZL Giants Orange have clinched a playoff appearance.

That's five of the eight minor league teams after a lull for a number of years for all of the organization.

Do yourself a favor and just don't look at the AA Richmond standings.

Giants have a lot of outfielders in AAA right now:

Davis, Duggar, Gerber, Shaw, McCarthy, Rickard, Ramos, Garcia, Reed
