Brady and Cousins were both tackled almost exactly the same way with Cousins getting a penalty and Brady did not get the penalty.

Former NFL Officiating Chiefs Blandino and Pereira do not agree with the NFL saying there was a penalty on Matthews. The NFL has even decided to use the Matthews clip as a training video now to show what should not be done when taking down a QB.

NFL thoughts on Clay Matthews tackle >>> NFL to use Clay Matthews penalty in teaching video

Should they also make a training video about this hit on Brady that was not called? Share your thoughts on the differences between these tackles

Brady tackle all is good no penalty. In my opinion it looks worse than the one Matthews did

Matthews tackle all bad we need a training video to show what not to do.

The NFL needs to figure this shit out they cant have it both ways

I rarely sympathize with the whiny Packers but that Matthews call was fucking terrible.

That said, I also sympathize with the refs. The NFL rules are so fucked up and gray these days that I fully understand even the refs don't know what the fuck to call.

To me it's like TSA or call center reps. Throw them out on the front lines for all the blame to deal with a shit situation to begin with. The replacement ref fiasco was where I lost a lot of respect for the NFL (after using them as a scapegoat for their shitty rules).

Cant fix the outcomes if the rules are not subjective.

They way the rules appear to be now it makes it very hard for all the refs to see things equally and call the penalties the same. In both of those vids above both should have had one called or neither should have been called

I know this doesn’t show the landing where Clay doesn’t drive him to the ground but it does show just how little of reaction time there is for defensive players. Cousins still has the ball for crying out loud.

I don't like the calls, but that's football today. The ONLY thing I see that could be called out, is on the Brady one the defender as he's going to the ground lets loose and slides over brady as he hits the ground, where Matthews keeps him wrapped up till the end and comes down on him a little more.

Splitting hairs, but that probably is right there on the edge of call or don't call.

And I don't believe Clay's penalty mattered if Cousins still had the ball or not. It wasn't that it was called for a late hit which would be about the timing of when he released the football, but the driving a QB into the ground, which doesn't matter if he just released it or still had it.

The things is that there is not much difference at all between the two tackles. The Matthews tackle the NFL wants to use as a video on what not to do. Then you have Brady having just about the same damn thing happen to him but the NFL cant use that as a training video because no penalty was called and they would not be able to explain why one is a penalty and one was not.

Maybe the NFL can paint targets on a the QB's uniforms , if you hit high a beeper goes off, if you hit low a beeper goes off, if you lift them off the ground a horn sounds... and if you give them a boo boo a siren goes off and you're automatically suspended, and you get no milk and cookies from Roger Goodell ...

Yes many are wondering that exact point. How can that Matthews video be used as an example and what not to do

THey say he scooped up his legs and then put him to the ground. I myself do not see any scooping of the legs that show picking him up at all

Honestly, the difference in the plays is the ref...that's about the only way you can explain it that I can see

The one on Brady is worse because the defender tried to lift his legs and drive his upper body down.

Matthews looks like he tried to get his shoulder into him on the way down.

There should be an on going ranking of these hits on QBs during the season.

See, you don't have have all the information. Within a second of that photo being taken, Clay Mathews touched an NFL quarterback.

Can't do that.

This is what they're basing it on. I don't like the rule either, but it is what it is.

Agree, like I said I was splitting hairs there. Using them as a video is interesting. I mean at some point you are going to have two plays nearly identical that are the demarcation point.

Like calling a strike vs. a ball in baseball. If your pitches keep going 1mm to the outside, sooner or later, you call it a ball. And the pitch before looked almost identical but was a strike.

Maybe that's the point right there? Maybe this will be like PI and other sports where refs judgements vary between crews.

But in the end asking those calls to be right every time is like asking your QB not to throw an incompletion. Even the best will get it wrong.

I don't like the rule, but with NFL injury lawsuits, players pushing for more guaranteed salaries, and QB's driving league revenue like they do, it may be something they have to do.

Big difference in losing a game or 2 in baseball, and getting a tie against a divisional opponent in a 16 game season, when head-to-head tie breakers come into play.

NFL really needs to get this right. So far they haven't.
