ESPN offered up a bunch of possible trade options for Leonard.

Seven best Kawhi Leonard trades we'd like to see

I have to say that they all look pretty weak to me. I don't think a single team would spend 2 seconds worrying about giving up what ESPN proposes for Kawhi. And I don't think that the Spurs would accept any of those trades.

The only one that comes close to making sense, is the Celtics because it involves another star player and lots of picks. Even then, I think the Spurs would want one of the Celtics young guys.

The Lakers makes sense if it's Kuzma and Ingram or maybe even Ball and Ingram plus picks. But things would have to be irreparable between Kawhi and the Spurs (like Kawhi threatening to sit out next season kind of irreparable) and Kawhi would have to try to force his way for them to give it serious thought. Especially since you know the last thing the Spurs will want to see is Kawhi in a Lakers uniform.

Yeah. Basically it has to be a situation where Kawhi has poisoned the situation so much that there is only 1 suitor for him, kinda like what Kyrie and PG did last year.

Not really. If anything, they might be a tad on the strong side. If you go back and look deals for other star players, they aren't exactly strong deals. Fans always try think up dollar for dollar trades but in reality, you're doing well if you're getting back 50 cents on the dollar in trades like this. Stars have the leverage in all of these situations, other teams know that, therefore their offers aren't going to be great. They're going to lowball because they know the trading team has no choice. They have to move the star and are forced to take the best lowball offer that comes their way. So some of these deals are actually pretty darn good, like the LA or Sixers offers, for SA.

Celtics made an offer for Kawhi in February and the Spurs not only rejected, but didn't even make a counter offer. No discussion whatsoever. That's good news.

Things have changed quite a bit since February.

Woj reports that the SPurs are not willing to offer Kawhi his super max until Kawhi proves he is willing to recommit to the program.

The problem there? Kawhi is surely feeling victimized by all the PR surrounding his situation. How likely is he to recommit without the supermax in play? If Woj is correct and the SPurs do not offer that supermax, it could end any hope that the two sides find common ground.

You should be very worried.

I think that the Spurs have to offer him the SuperMax in the next 3 weeks. Once FA starts he will no longer qualify for the Supermax,

Huh, Pelton just posted an article on how the Lakers could get Bron, PG13 & Kawhi.

Relevant to this thread, cause he proposes a trade of Kuzma + Ball + Deng for Kawhi. In his scenario, though, Kawhi would have to request a trade and let it be known that he would only re-up with the Lakers, thus decreasing his value to the other 28 teams.

Sounds like a long shot, because it would require Kawhi + LeBron + PG13 to ALL agree on LA together, AND it would require the Spurs to willingly cooperate with the scheme.

But if it did happen, man oh man, a starting 1-4 of Ingram, PG13, Kawhi, and Bron would be nuts. I don't care who you throw at Center (Pelton suggests Noel), you're gonna have a hard time scoring at that team.

Definitely a long shot. But it sure would be a lot of fun.

No way that happens. Way too many balls in the air at once for that to happen.

First off, it would need to happen in the next 2 weeks which is not nearly enough time to make a trade like that happen. It also assumes that Kawhi would demand to be traded ONLY to the Lakers. I also don't see why the Spurs would want Ball given they have Murray.

I think it would be more likely that if he really wanted to go to LA that he would demand that the Spurs sign him to a Supermax and then trade him to the Lakers. That would essentially end any chance of the Lakers getting Lebron but they could get PG13 still.

It's a long shot. But part of the premise was based on Kawhi wanting to go to the Lakers. So yeah, in order for it to have any shot, he'd have to want to go to the Lakers.

If he wants to be a Laker, then it could happen and 2 weeks is plenty of time to put it together if all sides are motivated.

But, if he doesn't have a real preference or if the Lakers are his preferred destination, but not the only place he'd go...then there's no way it happens.

His best move financially would be to sign the supermax and then demand a trade to the Lakers. But if he wants the best chance at a title, then he'd try top force the trade so that Lebron can still be signed.

Fun to speculate about, but pretty unlikely, imo.

Yeah. It's possible but it really requires a lot of things to happen in a very short period of time.

I still stick with the "Kawhi isn't going anywhere" option unless I hear something very different.

ZERO PERCENT chance the Spurs take such a shitty deal.

If Kawhi wants out, the Spurs will trade him to whatever team they want to do so....not just the Lakers

Some CLICK-BAIT fanboy author at ESPN hoping to get 35 pages on a message board retweeting his make believe scenario.

The Spurs control him. They dont have to do jack shit.

They will listen to offers all season long. They are either going to sign him, or they will trade him for a better deal.

Or they can just let him sit on the bench for another full year and walk altogether if he is a complete dick.

Heck, Boston can offer 10 times better options.

And WHY is there any need to trade him whatsoever? This is sportswriters thinking they have no other choice.

With him, they likely win 60-65 games and are a threat to win the West.
THe Spurs will not be some 20 win purgatory for a superstar desperately wanting to play for a winner.

If he is back at 100%, there is no reason to think they cannot win...especially with the emergence of Dejounte Murray as a future Spurs star. Murray is my darkhorse to win Most Improved player and possibly be an allstar candidate.

Worst case, they make a playoff run and try to resign him NEXT SUMMER when they will have a zillion more dollars in cap.
It is a contract year. He is not going to sandbag. He is going to give 110% like any other player in a contract year.

The SPURS would be complete idiots to trade him unless they get a once in a lifetime Blockbuster deal they cannot turn down.

Doing Nothing is 10 times BETTER than taking a mediocre trade.

Ultimately it boils down to how they value what they could get in return. If they thought that Ingram or Kuzma or Ball or whomever was going to be a start then it might be worth giving him up.

But if they view the players offered as just guys, then they are better off either looking for a better deal or playing this year and hoping that being able to sign him to a Supermax would be enough to keep him.

Yep, same here. I am still of the belief that Kawhi and the Spurs will work out whatever the rift is.

Even if they don't and Kawhi gets moved, I'm not convinced he's "dead set on going to the Lakers" to the point that he'd have to be to force a trade there.

Even if he did try, it wouldn't surprise me to see a team come in with a better offer and then hope they can re-sign him.

Yeah, the point of the article all hinges on Kawhi not only wanting out, but also on the Lakers being the only place he wants to go and him essentially forcing his way there.

Just seems like a bit much to me. Especially since Kawhi and Pop haven't even met to clear the air yet. I think once that happens...all of this speculation will stop.

Not really. It's about sportswriters speculating that Kawhi wants out, whether the rift is irreparable and where he might go or want to go if it is.

The rest of your post doesn't really mean anything if the relationship between Kawhi and the Spurs can't be fixed.

I agree that a healthy Spurs have a good shot at taking down the Warriors. But it doesn't matter if Kawhi wants out.

If he stays, which I think he will, then the speculation can end and it'll be fun to see how they stack up against the Warriors.

If the Spurs do nothing, they could also lose Kawhi for nothing.

If they didn't like the offers right now and Kawhi demanded a trade, they could stand pat and attempt to trade him at the deadline. Now, those offers will be mighty low because it would only be for the rest of the season, but by that time, everyone will have a pretty good idea on what teams doing what and maybe he will change his mind on where to go or even to stay.

The Spurs still have cards to play.

If LA did attempt to trade for Kawhi, it would have to be Ingram+Kuzma+2019 unprotected.
The Sixers could counter with Fultz+Covington+2018 #10 and #26, which would drive the price up.
The Celtics would also have options if they included either Brown or Tatum, but that's probably unlikely.

I think Kawhi stays.
