they can just let him sit on the bench for another full year and walk altogether if he is a complete dick.

And WHY is there any need to trade him whatsoever? This is sportswriters thinking they have no other choice.
With him, they likely win 60-65 games and are a threat to win the West.
THe Spurs will not be some 20 win purgatory for a superstar desperately wanting to play for a winner.
If he is back at 100%, there is no reason to think they cannot win...especially with the emergence of Dejounte Murray as a future Spurs star. Murray is my darkhorse to win Most Improved player and possibly be an allstar candidate.
Worst case, they make a playoff run and try to resign him NEXT SUMMER when they will have a zillion more dollars in cap.
It is a contract year. He is not going to sandbag. He is going to give 110% like any other player in a contract year.
The SPURS would be complete idiots to trade him unless they get a once in a lifetime Blockbuster deal they cannot turn down.

How does it make sense for the Celtics, other than dodging a potential Kyrie exit? It creates an even bigger logjam at the wings, plus I don't believe Kyrie is close to enough for Kawhi (unless Kawhi never gets completely healthy).

Danny Green confirmed there is no tension in the locker room. He most likely signs long-term.
Nothing to see here people
Kawhi is better, they can play 3 of their elite 4 wing players at the same time, they have Rozier and Smart (sometimes) who can play point and I am more worried about Kyrie's knees than I am about Kawhi's quad.

If I was desperate and needing a trade I wouldn’t even ask for Kyrie unless they threw in another play, injuries too serious. I would say Hayward, Brown/Tatum and picks but Haywards’ contract is up there
Both players have some issues to prove out next year. I like Kyrie but if you follow Brad's objectives its hard to argue with his positionless plan of Jaylen/Jason/Kawhi/AL/Hayward Throw in Rozier and Smart as guards and that bench and is hard to find a deeper younger more flexible team in the nba. They all can shoot so they are built for the playoffs
...and Kyrie fits the Spurs system how?
he is probably the best player they can get for Kawhi IF Kawhi wants out
No way that happens. Way too many balls in the air at once for that to happen.
First off, it would need to happen in the next 2 weeks which is not nearly enough time to make a trade like that happen. It also assumes that Kawhi would demand to be traded ONLY to the Lakers. I also don't see why the Spurs would want Ball given they have Murray.
I think it would be more likely that if he really wanted to go to LA that he would demand that the Spurs sign him to a Supermax and then trade him to the Lakers. That would essentially end any chance of the Lakers getting Lebron but they could get PG13 still.
If LA did attempt to trade for Kawhi, it would have to be Ingram+Kuzma+2019 unprotected.
The Sixers could counter with Fultz+Covington+2018 #10 and #26, which would drive the price up.
The Celtics would also have options if they included either Brown or Tatum, but that's probably unlikely.
I think Kawhi stays.
I think that the Spurs have to offer him the SuperMax in the next 3 weeks. Once FA starts he will no longer qualify for the Supermax,
Huh, Pelton just posted an article on how the Lakers could get Bron, PG13 & Kawhi.
Relevant to this thread, cause he proposes a trade of Kuzma + Ball + Deng for Kawhi. In his scenario, though, Kawhi would have to request a trade and let it be known that he would only re-up with the Lakers, thus decreasing his value to the other 28 teams.
Sounds like a long shot, because it would require Kawhi + LeBron + PG13 to ALL agree on LA together, AND it would require the Spurs to willingly cooperate with the scheme.
But if it did happen, man oh man, a starting 1-4 of Ingram, PG13, Kawhi, and Bron would be nuts. I don't care who you throw at Center (Pelton suggests Noel), you're gonna have a hard time scoring at that team.
I believe the super max is contingent upon his last season played in which you make DPOY, All-NBA first/second team, etc... so I think they're looking at his last season fully played (or maybe they consider a range of two years).
If Kawhi doesn't sign that extension and goes into FA, I feel that it's a million percent chance that he won't be a Spur for long.
