This does not matter, and it shouldn't. But, when I checked on his numbers today at Baseball Reference, I see that most of the important "counting numbers" for Votto this year are below his otherwise 162 game avg. So, for me, it is hard to give a guy the MVP when he had an off year based on his past performance.

It shouldn't matter. Every year should be looked at on its own for award voting.

What a player did in 2012 or 2011 should have no bearing on the 2013 MVP award...that's why they give out the award every year..each year is independent, and everyone should start from a blank slate at the beginning of the year.

Failure to win WS in last 3 years = one manager gone and GM on tightrope

I dont get how you can potentially sweep every major award and not win the MVP. Thats just seems like a contradiction. I get the whole non playoff team thing but still. Give it to the best player in the league and Goldy was the best player in the league.

Don't know about that, because when you're talking about MVP, you certainly need to take into account positional value.

A guy who plays up the middle (C, 2B, SS, and to a lesser extent, CF) can get away with inferior numbers to a corner outfielder or 1B, because of positional value.

There's a reason the likes of Pedroia, Larkin, Kent, Rollins, Pudge etc have MVPs despite not having the best numbers..

if the Tigers had a healthy Cabrera Boston would have got beat handily by the Tigers.

Goldschmidt. He owns 2/3 of the triple crown. Already won the Hank Aaron Award, Gold Glove. Soon to be the recipient of a Silver Slugger. He is going to sweep the awards.

Andruw Jones did all of those things you just mentioned in a season...and he didn't win MVP

There goes your theory.

In 2005.

Jones had 10 more homers and 11 more r.b.i than Pujols.

HOWEVER,

It appears the voters could not overlook the .070 difference in batting average ( .263 vs. .330 ) and the .090 difference in OBP ( .347 vs. .430 ).

You feel pretty strongly it should be Votto eh MS?

umm... willing to change my mind but from my calculations he is... there are still formulas to tinkle with... but i am willing to change my mind if someone gives me a good defense otherwise... i dont consider strikeouts to be a good defense!!

But i feel much stronger about the other 3 awards!!! i think they are all no brainers...

McCutchen 8.2 WAR
Votto 6.2 WAR

Of course, if say....Jeter...lead in several stats....THEN it would be important! Right?

:yahoo:

to me?? no, but i see where you are going... there are some players that the media want to give it to... But looking at who i said the top 5 choices are there is no east coast bias guy!!!

Just ask any Yankee fan. Jeter leads the league in intangibles each and every year.

I think if it does not go to Goldschmidt....McCutchen gets the MVP based on WAR....and the Pirates are the media darlings.

Goldschmidt....no other player put up better significant base numbers.

BUT.....this is the big chance for the ''WAR'' fans to gain a victory by having McCutchen's 8.2 WAR take the award from the ''old fashioned'' stats guys who would vote for Goldschmidt. (Who has a 6.4 WAR)

OPS+
Goldy 160
McCutch 158

McCutch is a better base runner. You don't need WAR to say McCutchen>Goldy

Votto still struck out more than he walked, drove in a pathetic amount of runs (I care about RBI even if many around here dont, cant speak for voters)and barely squeeked out 100 runs. (6 steals with 3 caught stealing isnt impressive)He might win. The Reds getting a Wild Card berth despite Dusty has to help. But Goldschmidt had more runs, hits, homers, RBI, steals and a better slugging percentage. It'll be interesting to see if McCutchen and other options with somewhat of a close proximity to Cincy split up his votes while PG gets all the WestCoast nods.

Is that really supposed to be a strike against Votto? Considering he had 138 strikeouts, a difference of three is pretty remarkable. And with that, he captured his fourth consecutive OBP title.

Votto didn't drive in many runs, but that had a bit to do with pitchers pitching around him with RISP. He batted .291 and slugged .455 with RISP (not great by any means, but he isn't hurting them either), but he was walked 51 times in just 193 PA, giving him a .477 OBP. He batted .287/.458/.434 with men on (332 PA).

I do think Goldy had a better year, but it's a lot closer than some people think IMO.

I think McCutchen wins it, and I think he's the most deserving.

Uh. Replacement level effects/determines value.

The name of the award is most valuable player
