Of the 4 major awards this is the only race that i think is close:

AL MVP- no brainer: Miguel Cabrera
AL CY- no Brainer: Max Scherzer
NL CY- No brainer: Clayton Kershaw

NL MVP:????

In my opinion
the top 5 in order is:

1. Joey Votto
2. Paul Goldshmidt
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Matt Carpenter
5. Freddy freeman

Paul Goldshmidt would have won if AZ made the playoffs- but it was too close to reward Goldshmidt the award without the playoff birth...

Significant stats that hurt Goldy- 25 GIDP(tied for 3rd worst in the NL), 7 CS with 15 SB-

With the 7 CS and 25 DP balls, that is an extra 32 Outs!!! That is 32 Possible Runners to score...

Significant stats that helped votto win: playing 162 games and leading baseball with walks(135)

Votto still struck out more than he walked, drove in a pathetic amount of runs (I care about RBI even if many around here dont, cant speak for voters)and barely squeeked out 100 runs. (6 steals with 3 caught stealing isnt impressive)He might win. The Reds getting a Wild Card berth despite Dusty has to help. But Goldschmidt had more runs, hits, homers, RBI, steals and a better slugging percentage. It'll be interesting to see if McCutchen and other options with somewhat of a close proximity to Cincy split up his votes while PG gets all the WestCoast nods.

Goldschmidt. He owns 2/3 of the triple crown. Already won the Hank Aaron Award, Gold Glove. Soon to be the recipient of a Silver Slugger. He is going to sweep the awards.

This does not matter, and it shouldn't. But, when I checked on his numbers today at Baseball Reference, I see that most of the important "counting numbers" for Votto this year are below his otherwise 162 game avg. So, for me, it is hard to give a guy the MVP when he had an off year based on his past performance.

I agree this the same thing that happend to Matt Kemp in 2011 after a sick season, so the same should apply here. Goldshmidt wont be MVP.

Didn't make the playoffs though, with him. Without him, who cares. The all important VALUE part. (Anybody think it'll ever be MOP with Oustanding taking over for Valueable? Or is that what the Hank award is for in the first place?)

I dont get how you can potentially sweep every major award and not win the MVP. Thats just seems like a contradiction. I get the whole non playoff team thing but still. Give it to the best player in the league and Goldy was the best player in the league.

I was just checking on the same thing. The doubles are down significantly.

Doesn't necessarily go to the best player though. If it did, it wouldn't be tough decision in the NL. It might in the AL though. But probably not.

Paul Goldschmidt had a tremendous season, but I think Freddie Freeman is the dark horse - he was the one consistent bat in the Braves lineup - a lot of those guys got cold at different points in the season but he didn't - Braves made the playoffs and won the division too so that has to count for something

AL MVP race is between Cabrera and Davis. It will be close but Cabrera will win.

I think it'd be verrry close if The Os had made the playoffs. Or if the Tigers hadnt. (If they hadnt it'd be a totally different vote)

Goldschmidt....no other player put up better significant base numbers.

BUT.....this is the big chance for the ''WAR'' fans to gain a victory by having McCutchen's 8.2 WAR take the award from the ''old fashioned'' stats guys who would vote for Goldschmidt. (Who has a 6.4 WAR)

Yeah but by the time the votes are mailed in im sure the playoff picture is pretty much set in stone. Performance in the postseason doesn't matter but the voters already know which teams are making it.
