I'd actually go with less than that, but I didn't see the "less than" option before I clicked on $500,000. I spend about $6000 a year now, so $500,000 would be luxurious and I'd probably just live off the interest. House is paid for and I'm 50.

I'm fine with living my current lifestyle into retirement.

I've found it's the people in your life who matter most, and I don't mean that as some lame cliche. Basically, I'm more worried about who I'm spending my time with rather than what toys I have.

That said, obviously having toys and the people who matter most is best. But since the question was "what is the minimum", rather than "what would you wish you had".
This exactly...and speaking from experience...HEALTH is just as important. Know way, way too many retirees that have plenty of retirement income/money/toys but don't have the physical ability to enjoy any it.

The advice I'd give is pay as much attention to your health contributions as you do to your 401k contributions. But, not to the point where you can't enjoy some fine whiskey every now and then! JMO.
