Prior to 1909, Arkansas was known as the Cardinals. After a win against LSU that year, coach Hugo Bezdek said his players played like “a bunch of Razorback hogs,” and the nickname stuck. A year after, the student body voted to keep the name. The first Tusk, a Russian boar, was introduced in the 1960s. The current live mascot is Tusk V.

We’ve also had an inordinate amount of well-known coaches come from Arkansas for such a small state and ironically most of them never coached for Arkansas:

Bear Bryant
Jimmy Johnson
Tommy Tuberville
Gus Malzahn
Barry Switzer
Butch Davis
Fred Akers (Texas, Purdue)
Ken Hatfield (Clemson)
Charlie Strong

Pete Carroll and Monte Kiffin also began their coaching careers at Arkansas. Frank Broyles had guys on his coaching tree like Hayden Fry and Johnny Majors. We’ve missed out on hiring some damn good coaches throughout the years.

You mean like:

2009 BCS Champion and 1979 AP / UPI National Champions
1978 AP National Champions
2017 CFP Playoff Champions
1926 NCF National Champions
2015 CFP Playoff Champions and 1965 AP National Champions
1964 AP and UPI National Champions
1973 UPI National Champions
2012 BCS Champions and 1992 AP / UPI National Champions
2011 BCS Champion and 1961 AP / UPI National Champions

You might not like the results, but they are as 9 / 10 are legitimate as you can get (AP / UPI / BCS and CFB Playoff). 1926 NCF was a Retro, but they did play in the only Bowl of the day (Rose) and Undefeated Alabama played Undefeated Stanford to a 7-7 tie. Alabama and Stanford are regarded as Co-Champions from that season by many.
Alabama's claim of 16 national titles disputed

I lose respect for any Bama fan that claims a title in 64. There might be other shady claims, but that’s the one I’m most familiar with.

Once again there is a difference between not liking the results and disputing the legitimacy - especially in regard to AP, UPI, BCS and CFB Playoff NCs awarded. People can whine and fuss all they want about this year or that year, but...

Alabama is an 11 time AP National Champion: 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017.

Alabama is a 10 time UPI / Coaches National Champion: 1961, 1964, 1973, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2017.

Alabama is 3 time BCS Champion: 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Alabama is a 2 time CFB Playoff National Champion: 2015 and 2017.

If one recognizes AP, UPI, BCS and CFB National Championships for one, they should recognize them for all. Alabama has won one of more of these in 12 different years: 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017.

On top of this, Alabama has 4 Undefeated Rose Bowl Teams from the pre-AP Era they claim (1925, 1926, 1930 and 1934). Count them or not. Does not matter. There was nothing better than being an Undefeated Rose Bowl team during that Era.

1941 is bunk.

Back to the original point made by @Diego Roll Tide 9/10 of "0-9" NCs stat he mentioned were either AP, UPI, BCS or CFB Playoff National Championship years. Only the "6" year was a stretch using Alabama's 1926 9-0-1 Rose Bowl Co-Championship Team - which was recognized as a NC for that season by many selectors including the National Championship Foundation and the Helms Foundation - which many other schools use in their claims too.

If I were running things at Alabama, I'd fly 17 Flags: 12 for the aforementioned AP, UPI, BCS and CFB Playoff National Championships (which should be recognized by any other schools that have won one or more of those) + 5 for the Undefeated, Untied Bowl Champions that fall outside of that AP, UPI, BCS, CFB Playoff National Championship category (1925, 1930, 1934, 1945 and 1966).

Finally, that being said, at the end of the day, let the NC trophies fall where they may. What really counts to me is being an Undefeated, Untied Bowl Champion (regardless of NCs awarded or not).

Alabama leads the way with 9: 1925, 1930, 1934, 1945, 1961, 1966, 1979, 1992 and 2009.

Penn State is second with 5: 1968, 1969, 1973, 1986 and 1994.

Then, there are the others including Auburn with 2: 2004 and 2010.

Auburn 2
Urban Meyer 0

What myth?

You might be 2-0, but in those two wins you allowed 17 points in both games.

We, however, allowed none in our 31-0 skull dragging in the Fiesta Bowl, Meyer's only shutout loss in his coaching career.

It’s okay.

We don’t expect Georgia fans to be anything close to experts on national titles.

Except of course, preseason ones. They are kings of August.

If you are piling on Auburn, throw in the fact that they fuck goats.

Its not a matter of being a claim or not. Alabama is the 1964 AP AND UPI National Champion. It was a different Era. For better or worse, those 2 selectors awarded their National Championships before the Bowls.

There were other teams who won either the AP and / or UPI National Championships before and after 1964 who either didn't Bowl (Auburn, Notre Dame and Oklahoma to name a few) or lost their Bowl Game (Tennessee, Texas and Michigan State to name a few) TOO AFTER the National Championship was awarded, as the AP and the UPI based their NCs on Regular Season results ONLY during that Transitional Era that finally came to an end in 1973.

On one thing I agree, National Championships should definitely be considered by Era, since Eras change. The AP started considering Bowl results in 1965, took a step back in 1966 and took a step forward again in 1967. The UPI started considering Bowl Results in 1974.

Don’t bother. Those “questioning legitimacy” aren’t going to be moved by facts. My policy is to let people ignore reality if they choose. The facts aren’t going away whether they like them or not.
