Vikings may not be bluffing on Peterson

As the rhetoric has increased in recent days from
Adrian Peterson’s camp, the Vikings have continued to calmly point out that Peterson remains under contract with the team.
Some regard the official stance from the team as a we-have-no-intent-to-trade-Percy-Harvin strategy for building trade value, or at a minimum as a way to ensure that Peterson eventually gets the brunt of the blame if/when there’s a divorce. But in spending a full day (and night) at the league meetings and talking to folks in position to know what’s really happening, I’m starting to get the sense that, when the Vikings say Adrian Peterson is under contract, the only intended message is that Adrian Peterson is under contract.
Which is a nice way of saying, “He plays for us or he plays for no one.”
When Peterson’s agent, Ben Dogra, told multiple reporters last week that Peterson won’t be released, the goal undoubtedly was to ensure that anyone inclined to try to trade for Peterson would show up for the league meetings in Phoenix ready to talk turkey. When Dogra said Monday that it’s not in Peterson’s best interests to play for the Vikings, Dogra may have been taking one last shot at conjuring a market that simply isn’t there.
It’s one thing to assume Peterson’s contract, which pays him $13 million this year. It’s another to give the Vikings the kind of compensation that makes the trade sensible from their perspective. More than a quarter century after getting the very short end of the Herschel Walker trade, the Vikings surely have no interest in bookending that with getting snookered for Peterson.
So unless someone steps up with a willingness to pay top-of-market money to a 30-year-old tailback who has yet to be reinstated after pleading no contest to spanking his four-year-old son with a switch until the boy bled and a desire to give the Vikings trade compensation that reflects the player’s value, the choice necessarily becomes play for the Vikings at $13 million this year or play for no one — and return $2.4 million in signing bonus money remaining from his 2011 contract.

Personally I hope he sits out on his entitled ass all year and doesn't get paid a penny. Some people need to learn some life lessons...

just seems much to do about nothing

The Vikings remain in the drivers seat and only Peterson, and his representation seem to think other wise.
This remains the biggest non-story I've seen in a long time.

At 30 years old, that's a game of chicken he can't win. Let's say he sits out the year..... the Vikings still own him lol, and then he's 31

Yawn. Team is not going to get any windfall in return for a 30 year old RB, AP or no AP. Not with the way teams view RBs in today's market. Enough with the Herschel Walker trade mumbo jumbo already, and fast forward to the 21st Century will ya? Opinions, opinions...

Dang. This sort of reminds me of when Barry sanders no longer wanted to play for the lions. Lions could have got draft picks for Barry but played hardball. There is a reason why certain teams continue to suck. Vikings would be wise to trade ap and get what they can rather than pay huge salary for guy that dont want to be there. But I bet they would rather have him sit out.

He most likely would fake an injury if he's held hostage by Vikings management.

To what end though? I'm not saying you're wrong, just that that would be a really shortsighted. The Vikings played without the guy last year. He rips the club for not standing behind him, but the club didn't beat his child, he did. He's set to make what, $12 million this year? So he sits out all year with a fake injury, then what? A) the club keeps him and he either plays or fakes another injury or B) they trade him. If it is option B, tell me what team would pay him more than the Vikings are on the hook for, for a RB that hasn't played in two years, beats his kid and quit on his team? You giving up a 1st round pick and $12 million a year for that?

Peterson was having issues with the Vikings before the child beating incident. If the Vikings were smart they'd trade AP instead of having him be a negative locker room presence.

I disagree. If you let this guy have his way because of a holdout or fake injury, you lose all credibility moving forward. Every time a player wants a new deal, he will fake an injury or sit out. If I'm the Vikings, I call his bluff and tell him to go spit. If he fakes an injury he's only killing himself when it comes to future earnings

Why keep a player that is unhappy with his situation. The smart thing to do would be to get as much value as you can by putting him on the trading block. The Vikings are one of the poorest run franchises in the NFL.

Would the Cowboys trade Dez if he claimed he were unhappy? Would the Packers trade ARod? Would the Texans trade Watt? I'm thinking they would all say thats what your contract is for. The Vikings gave AP a signing bonus with his 6 year deal. AP got that money, but the Vikings take a cap hit spread over the 6 years. He did nothing last year to earn the money they've paid him. If they trade him, the bonus pro rate will accelerate to a large cap hit now. Plus the thing I think you are missing on the whole fake injury thing is that the guy has pride in his play and all time legacy. I don't think for a second he would fake injury

I recall the Packers trading Brett Favre when he was unhappy. They rolled with Aaron Rodgers who was an unproven QB at that time.

Could he potentially pull the "retired" stunt that Orton did? I still dont fully understand the legality of that move.

If he retired, the Vikings could ask him to return most of his signing bonus and also not pay him, while still controlling his rights if he came back. He wants more guaranteed money, so this would seem like a poor option for him

alright. I'll bite. What issues was he having with the Vikings prior to beating his kids?

Problem is his current contract makes him a tough sell to other teams. Who wants to send two high picks for a 30year old RB and have to pay him 12M? How many RB's play into their 30's? Only an idiot would trade a high pick for him and pay his salary. If he agreed to a lowball contract and Minny took A 4th for him I could see a trade happening. I don't see Minny getting a 1st and a team paying him his current deal.

If I offend anyone here Sorry but you have to be football stupid if you think otherwise.

And the Vikings would still own his rights without having to pay him. It would be better than the suspension he's fighting. I don't see AP making that call.
