Vareen is more than a specialist. He makes difficult catches in traffic which is not something usually associated with a RB. He's more than a dump and run guy, and that what makes him so valuable.

The reality of it is ......more Shane Vareen types are going to start being sought. Wouldn't be surprised to see RBs catching passes at the combine next year.

The NFL is a copy cat league and Shane Vareen is the latest prototype.

I'd be shocked if the Pats give him 5 million for multiple seasons. I hope he sticks around, but he's going to need to bring his asking price down.

he's not worth it and if he were they wouldn't pay a RB that much anyway. They can't afford it for one thing.

Anyone who thinks Vareen is the best thing since Faulk is badly undervaluing the contributions of Danny Woodhead. Woodhead was a monster catching passes out of the backfield and excelled at running between the tackles (especially given his size). His shiftiness is amazing and his size combined with his elusiveness was a huge asset because he could hide behind his blockers then explode by defenders before they could react. He was often Brady's crunch time binky.

What he is worth is irrelevant.

What he will get offered on the FA market is what matters. I don't see him getting a 5 year $25M deal. But a 3 year $12M is really likely.

You can talk about his production in the past all you want. But his lack of production is more a product of lack of opportunity due to NE philosophy.

Honestly if I am Vereen's agent and I am looking to max out his career earnings, there is no chance I let him sign with NE. Their rotation philosophy is a career earnings killer. That is why he is asking for way more than he will get offered on the open market now. Because signing in NE will hurt his future value.

I'm in the camp of keeping Vareen. I am not in the camp of throwing money at him.

I think he is going to be valued at 2 1/2 to 3 million/year. I'm not sure we give him 3 million per.....

I would also say that players on Super Bowl winning teams get overpaid all the time. Teams for some reason think that stealing a player away from a Super Bowl winner somehow will rub off on the rest of the team. I would say a Super Bowl ring bumps value of a player about 25%. Look at Joe Flacco getting paid like an elite quarterback after winning a Super Bowl. He isn't terrible but he is not worth as much as Aaron Rodgers. Look at the Ravens players after that Super Bowl and all they got paid. This past year for the Seahawks they lost some back up players that got paid like they were starters elsewhere in the market. So yeah it wouldn't surprise me to see Vereen get something like $4 million a year as some team will view him like a Darren Sproles type clone and see great value in that.

Sure.. I think the big challenge for the Patriots is that their two top FA Revis and McCourty are two of the best in the game. (and cutting McCourty would be foolish)

Without those two the defense changes dramatically. A Superbowl winning defense. There's a reason Rex Ryan was in tears when Revis left. He gave him the flexibility to be an all-star defensive wizard of a coach. Bellichick knows it too.

Unfortunately everyone else is potentially expendable.

HOWE TALKS ABOUT RIDLEY, VEREEN’S FUTURE:

Boston Herald beat writer Jeff Howe spoke to 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich on Friday and he believes both Patriots running backs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen will be playing elsewhere in 2015.

“Vereen’s market right now is up to $3.5 million dollars a year, which is pretty much the going rate for running backs these days,” said Howe via CBS Boston. “That is kind of what you can expect Vereen to look at this offseason. The Patriots have shown so far no willingness to go anywhere near that number, which is how they’ve treated running backs since Belichick has been around.”

Howe points out that Vereen isn’t a player who has enough production to warrant that type of deal and despite what he’s done at times in the passing game, he doesn’t believe the Patriots will pay him that much.

“$3.5 million dollars for a guy who still has never rushed for 400 yards in his career, and I know how valuable he is for the passing game, but I don’t see the Patriots moving anywhere near that,” said Howe. “If Vereen wants to get paid those figures, he’s probably gone.”

As for Ridley, he believes that looking at the Patriots current situation in their backfield that Ridley likely wouldn’t receive enough carries to warrant a big pay day after the season if he was to re-sign on a one-year deal coming off his ACL and MCL tear.

“I think Ridley wants to be back, but he owes it to himself that he’s going to get a one-year deal or something that looks like a one-year deal,” said Howe. “He owes it to himself to find a depth chart where he can go out and guarantee that he’s probably going to be no worse than second, earn some carries and maybe take on the lead role at some point in the season.”
