I think with dissly playing so well as a blocker and receiver, vannett was expendable. willson is more of a pass catcher, pretty poor blocker. but maybe thats all we need in a #2 TE?

I think it's a good trade for the Seahawks. I believe Vannett would've been a free agent at the end of the season and I don't know if the Seahawks would've retained him.

In the short term I personally believe that Luke Willson is a better TE than Vannett. Not as strong of a blocker, but a better receiver. Had Vannett walked in the offseason, I don't think the Seahawks would've received a comp pick higher than what they received in the trade.

Agreed... I also feel that Vannett was just a poor man's version of Dissly... Luke Willson brings us a different dimension via the passing game... He can stretch the field more...

Just don't ask him to block or catch contested balls, put a helmet on Willson and he most of the time drops the ball.

I'm not asking him to block, which is why I said he brings a different skill set... You're putting too much emphasis on him dropping the ball most of the time because that is not the case...

Pretty much a lateral move in my opinion. When it comes to Vannett, I was a lot more bothered we used a 3rd rounder to draft him than I am about trading him for a 5th. What I see with him is a player who is capable in many areas but doesn't do anything at a high level.

Luke W makes a play here and there and has really good TE speed, but he's not much more than a role player when you boil it down. But given a choice between Vannett or Luke W & a 5th, it's not much of a decision.

We can barely block with our line, our tight ends don't seem to be doing fuck all either, and Dissly is a better blocker than both of them. This line could field 10 lineman (in addition to 2 TEs, 2 WRs, 1 RB, and a QB) and still allow pressure in < 3 seconds.

Yeah i think that is the thing, they were not going to re-up his contract so they got what they could for him. Solid TE good blocker and solid pass catcher, sad to see a 3rd round pick ( TE ) go. I don't think he was worth a 3rd in a trade but he was more valuable than a 5th. I actually would have liked to see a CB/S in the trade for Vannett.

I think another element that played a role is that Ed Dickson is eligible to return from the IR after 8 weeks (I believe). I know if we would've received a comp pick for Vannett so I think the trade makes a lot of sense.

We would've or did you mean wouldn't have? Wouldn't someone need to sign him for some decent money (which I doubt anyone will do) for us to get a comp pick?

speaking of comp picks looks like the Hawks should grab a 3rd for Thomas who was a rank value of a 39 and a 5th rounder for Coleman who is a rank value of 145. All because of the lost/signed cancellations of the other teams that lost more valuable players than Coleman. How cool is that! The Coleman pick could drop down to a 7th though or none at all because of how SECRET the real math is behind the comp picks.
........................................Value
Earl Thomas 3 $13,750,000 39
Justin Coleman 4 $9,000,000 145
J.R. Sweezy 6 $4,500,000 347 x Jason Myers 6 $3,875,000 455 (these cancel each other out)
Shamar Stephen 6 $4,150,000 401
Mike Davis 7 $2,975,000 588
Brett Hundley 7 $1,875,000 744

Luke was OK yesterday. Caught both balls thrown his way and got a big first down.

Dissly continues to shine and is really becoming one of the best TE's in the NFL. 8th most receiving yards and 1st in TD's among TE's. That's great to see.

My knock on Luke W has always been (outside of an exceptional play here and there), that the throw has to be about an 8 out of 10 or he's not making the catch. But that grab yesterday on 3rd down was fantastic.

Dissly is special. He owes Carson a beer for the hold that wiped away a TD, but he turned in another excellent performance and is off to a really great start to the season when you factor in last year's injury.

Oops sorry I was kinda tipsy when I wrote that post. I meant to say we likely wouldn't have received a comp pick for him, but looking at it I'm not sure. Maybe a 6th or a 7th at best. So either way it's a win-win because I don't see the talent drop off at TE #2 to be all that substantial between Willson and Vannett. Different skill sets, but I personally feel like the difference between them overall is minimal. Also once Ed Dickson gets back, Vannett would've likely been the #3 TE.
