Everyone needs to keep in mind that Goodell works for the owners. Do you think all these high profile, media focussed decisions are made by Goodell? These things are the owners speaking. Care to guess why the owners make no qualms in giving that guy millions of dollars? So, that is the front and center when such things creep up. In Chris Carter's words, "He is the fall guy".

Regardless, integrity has nothing to do with concussions.

Exactly...are we really to think that 32 billionaires are going to allow an "employee", (albeit ha highly paid one) to make critical decisions regarding the health of the league? No...the commish is the figure head...voice and fall guy of the owners.

you dont get it

if you dont play, someone else does instead

its their livelihood

make any sense?

No you don't get it. The fans want their players to play, the players want to play, the teams want the played to play, Roger and the league gives what everybody wants in this case.
Trying to connect this to players cheating on the field is asinine.

It's just like guys that made bridges back in the day. Many have fallen to their deaths or got crushed, they knew it was a dangerous job. But it put food on the table and like you said, if they didn't do it, other would have. World's deadliest catch, those guys make big bank in a short time period, but risk their asses

...and when the coal companies told their retirees that their lung problems had absolutely nothing to do with all that time they spent down in the mines...

And they all joined those professions at their own will.
No one forced them to play football or join the NFL.

The concussions in the NFL and how they were handled is just as much the players fault as it is the leagues. How many times were players told to sit only to argue their case with the team that they were fine and are ready to play. This whiny BS the ex players is just that, complete bullshit. I can understand the players argument they need better retirement benefits, but to sit there and act as though they had no fucking clue concussions were bad for your health is BULLSHIT, the public knew this, the players knew this, the NFLPA knew this, every body knew.

No. They. Didn't. Everyone thought a concussion was a short term headache that went away like a bruise. The doctor in the movie (and subject of the documentary) discovered that concussions can have long term permanent effects that sometimes didn't show up until decades later. Watch the documentary.

I'm sorry but this in bold is BS.

If the league had no ownership in this, the post concussion protocol would be the same as it's always been. Here's the bottom line (IMO)...the league know more about the long term effect of concussions than the players did...this apparently was back in the day when a concussed player was given smelling salts and stayed out a few plays and most likely returned to the game at some point.

Players play, this was their livelihood and from the time they were kids, getting your "bell rung" was just part of the game. Yes, some of them fought to stay in the game.

Now...to your point...even if the NFL had shared the long term dangers on concussions with the players...it's likely the majority would still play the game...but the fact that they did not share this info until it was exposed and made public via a 3rd party created some legal exposure and made it easy for the owners to "settle" with the players.

and:
The players were told that the NFL, through their retiree health insurance policy, would cover injuries that arose from their playing days. So things like arthritis or knee replacements are covered. But the NFL wouldn't provide any health insurance for those players that had medical issues arise from their history of concussions. So the players that are 60 years old with advanced dementia were shit out of luck.

Players from the 90s forward have much better healthcare than players from 80s and earlier...tough sport...I really don't blame players that walk away early or those that try to make as much as they can for that short period of time because physically life after the NFL is not that easy on a lot of those guys.

Also, all this affects the integrity of "the game".

I hear ya, maybe you're joking...but withholding the dangers of the sport from the participants is a little different than affecting the integrity imo.
