Garbage trade for LA if you don't use that cap space this year. Thomas doesn't pair up well with Ball at all. No point in resigning him. Nance is a useful role player that's cheap that can be resigned to a fair market deal. The draft pick will be in the low 20s. You're better off keeping the players and moving them at a later date if that's the best you can do

They don't have to use the cap space this year. This creates flexibility. They can try to use it this off season and if that doesn't pan out, they can use it in 2019.

Maybe they get 2 max guys this year, 1 max guy this year and 1 in 2019, or 2 in 2019. Who knows how it plays out? Point is, they now have options that they didn't have about 45 minutes ago.

Balance of Kyrie trade (and losing a late, protected 1st rounder):

Nets pick: currently #7, but within 1 game of #1
Jae Crowder: having a poor season, still has a bargain contract
Ante Zizic: essentially a rookie, hasn't received any PT (would expect that to change a lot next season if Lebron leaves)
Clarkson: 17.18 PER, 6th MOY candidate, under contract for 2 more seasons
Nance: 19.55 PER, all around hustle player, on rookie contract

You're way off.

Both teams benefit and get what they need from this trade. The Lakers got more of what they need, but the Cavs benefit as well.

The Lakers now have the cap space for 2 max guys and with the 1st round pick, they may be able to use that to get rid of Deng's contract which would give them almost enough for 3 max guys.

The Cavs get younger and more athletic. This could very well get them out of the East, but not a title.
