Exactly. If you contracted half the teams in the league today, you'd eliminate all the #4 and #5 starters, and half the #3's

What percent of current players are white?? when the talent pool gets bigger, thats why baseball needed to have expansion teams... To think that back then the bottom rotation guys were better than they are now is just very odd to me...

That's a valid point, but it's also valid that at that time, baseball was America's premier game and had the premier athletes. Today, baseball gets the athletes that couldn't play football or baseball

I believe baseball players were just as good then as now. In many ways, better. Guys didn't used to have TJ surgery, because they threw all the time Starters were conditioned to throw 9 innings a game and 300 innings a year. Hitters back then would hit the ball the same 400-500 feet they do now. No way to know for sure, JMO

Film work and advanced scouting techniques (both statistical and using film) have made todays game MUCH more difficult. If a player (pitcher OR hitter) has the tiniest flaw in their game today, it will be found and exploited immediately. "Back in the day", it could take years for that hole to be identified and communicated.

I'm too young to have watched Ted Williams but by all accounts that I have read, Ted Williams was considered ONE of the best players of his era. Bonds was considered THE best player of his era and it wasn't close.

You want to look at comparative stats? OPS+ tells us Bonds is it. You want versatility? Bonds also has an assload of SB, has hit everywhere from leadoff to 5th, and was the first 400/400 and 500/500. The war robbed Ted of the opportunity to post up more numbers but ultimately, he didn't. If you want to use pre-2000 Bonds numbers, then you will have to agree that not only was Bonds a better defender and more versatile due to his speed, but he also put up comparable numbers while completely ignoring another 8 years of career stats, which is IMO a load of shit.

Good point bringing in his base-stealing prowess. That has not even been mentioned yet in this thread.

Bonds had 10 seasons of 20+ SB with a 75% or better rate.

He had 10 20/20 seasons, 5 30/30 seasons and 1 40/40 season.

Williams was a complete non-factor on the base-paths.

I don't doubt that elite players of yesteryear would have been elite no matter when they play... But by looking at league averages you can easily see how padded their stats were...

Not sure why its more difficult since both sides (hitters and pitchers) have the same technology plus for every flaw found it can be fixed earlier also Todays players have a big edge Imagine if Babe ruth had a personal trainer:suds:

he must have got a new one

Pablo Sandoval - 3B - Red Sox
Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters at a press conference Thursday that Pablo Sandoval has dropped 20-22 lbs. since the end of the 2015 season.
How cute that you think this will last.

For his sake, I HOPE he has seen the light. But I have seen him go down this road in the past. We will see.
