I've always had Big Train at the top, but I'll reconsider... Matthewson, Koufax, & Gibson also deserve to be in the convo....

And, I just noticed some people are adding Kershaw already! I need to update my analysis...
Walter Johnson was just a farm kid who could throw straight gas. The way he threw was so smooth and effortless.

It is the technology that was available at the time.

And Bonds had a doctor give him his stuff through Rx. So ARGUABLY Aaron’s use was WORSE than Bonds.

But I don’t use that argument against Aaron. He utilized technology that was available at the day and wasn’t illegal in the game.
No. I'm talking about the impact of taking greenies versus a massive amount of PEDs with regards to their performance on the field which is what this poll is measuring. There is no comparison. I'm not discussing any moral or legal issues and don't care about them. Bonds cheating is the only reason he is in this particular poll as the 4th best player ever.

Bonds didn’t cheat. No more than Aaron did.

most of the anti-steroid debate comes from emotion and reality... we all knew it was happening and we all were for it... Until bonds broke beloved records with it... Hell, we were all ok with Mark Mcguire breaking Roger Maris' record... but when Bonds broke McGuire's record we couldnt handle that... and then he broke Hank Aaron's and it was hell to pay for steroids...

i truly do think if Bonds did not do steroids we would be looking at steroids a different way....and it would not be as villified...
Thats interesting because I don't believe that at all.

McGwire and Sosa chasing a record was exciting. Bonds easily demolishing it made us realize how stupid we were for thinking that.

Prob. Bonds at #4... everyone was doing roids back then, and other drugs in the mid 20th century as well. As the great Bill Burr once said with regards to Lance Armstrong: "Look, our roided up guy beat your roided up guy."

The game, its fans and the beats were more than OK with allowing middling players to up themselves to outplay the actual greats of the era. But when one of the actual greats decided to play THE SAME GAME, he demonstrated who the REAL great players were.

Bonds was a different class of player. But the rest of the players were allowed to use something to boost their effectiveness. And no one had a problem with THEM. He had enough. He needed to make it clear who the REAL big dog was.

Someone else would've done it.

Clemens, for example, was an easy villain, too.

I can assure you that at the time they didnt seem like 'middling' players.

Baseball was 'boring' to the masses. Baseball found its story. And then they found the real story. Books were written. Its easy to track.

2005 is when Canseco outed the problem.

I am no teenager. I lived through the era.

Both were good players, but both were middling at best when talking about the best players in the game. Sosa, in particular, was hardly anything. Mac was a basher, but he had major holes in his game.

Anderson was the MAJOR sore thumb that broke everything, though.

dont get me wrong, no matter what steroids would have become illegal... But Bonds really pushed the PEDs being evil, and ruining baseball card... not sure if anyone else could have done that... not even AROD made steroids look bad...

Steroids doesn’t help hand/eye, which is primarily what hitting is, though. Bonds knew the strike zone so only swung at pitches he was able to do something with. He wasn’t getting HRs off checked swings.

that wasnt my point... i dont care... in context i was saying that Bonds is the reason Steroids is villified... bonds really ruined Baseball in many ways...

without bonds, clemens would probably be in the HOF by now... all steroid players would IMO...
