Not trying to instigate but I don't believe Toyota has ever won a Camel Trophy, but it looks like Ford has one in the trophy case. In truth Land Rover which was a Ford product for many years looks to have dominated this race for many years. A lot of them while under the F-O-R-D ownership.
There is no denying that the Tacoma is a little interesting truck that has its place, but I wouldn't say it is the most capable off roader. That has got to go to the Jeep. Anyways the OP seems to be making a good choice for his needs even though a Ford F150 would be the best choice. lol

BTW: Best small truck ever made was the Jeep J10 or Honcho. Now that would make for a sweet little truck today.
I am by no means saying the Tacoma is the be all to end all offroad vehicles. But off the showroom floor nothing beats it that America makes.
And yeah the old jeep trucks are pretty cool but they have the same problem jeeps have today. They twist off axles like crazy. Sure you can upgrade to chromo axles for around 2000 bucks but then you start twisting off drive shafts. And if I really wanted a capable offroad truck I would try and track down a Hilux which is made by Toyota but isn't available in the US.
And the land rover was originally made in the united kingdom and is now made unfortunately in india.
And the OP asked about Toyotas and if they would tow a camper.
I'm not trying to dog US made trucks. I'm relaying all I've learned over twenty years of serious off roading.
Toyota trucks are tough mofos compared to American trucks, and I say this from experience, not from any misguided loyalty to a certain brand.
