NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Redskins have decided they will not trade franchise player Kirk Cousins.

"He is not going anywhere," said RapSheet. "They decided that they are not going to trade him to the 49ers." The Redskins giving off the impression that they won't deal Cousins increases their leverage, but Rapoport seems convinced Cousins is indeed off the trade block. If so, the 49ers may have to turn to a band-aid veteran like Brian Hoyer or Matt Schaub. The free agent signal-caller market is all but barren, and no respected draft analysts believe any quarterback in this year's class is worthy of the No. 2 overall pick.

Im looking at it like this. If KC has a bad year he is gone. If Kc has a good year let the bidding war begin. If we lose the bidding war then we get a 3rd.

Why & why does tagging him change any of this? I have been maintaining all along (& Cousins camp has basically been implying the same thing) that he would be tagged and that both sides would continue to negotiate through July if needed.

Not sure how some random report from the NFL-N changes this.

What is a good or bad year? You tend to look at everything in absolutes. The NFL quite often does not work in this manner.

There was a report from NFLN that said he is not going to be traded. My fan status are you serious? I want what's best for the team. I think it contract demands are too high that is why I was interested in a trade. What is wrong with that?

In this case perhaps Cousins really wants to stay with the Redskins but throws out signals of going elsewhere & doesn't dispute any media reports of this type. In the end he winds up perhaps with more money than if he would be very agreeable & appear to take whatever is offered.

I am not saying this is accurate but it is certainly possible or perhaps a part of the story. I still can't believe that you think that someone like this should just settle for whatever is offered and leave a bunch of money on the table. In what universe do most people think like this?

I never said settle. We don't know the LT offers so we can comment on it.

OK - so let's say you are Kirk Cousins. Where do you draw the line? Do you only take $60M guaranteed even if the team will give you $80-90M? That just seems outright stupid to me. I wouldn't do that.

BTW Dean - you keep looking at this as a fan & portray this whole thing as a game. Remember for the players this is their life and their job. I would say taking care of your family comes before the team. Therefore - I don't begrudge any player for making as much money as possible as long as they put forth the proper effort (e.g. Fat Al will never win my respect).

For anyone worried about how Cousins's 24 million cap hit will affect the team, try sportrac or another site and do the roster management link. You'll be surprised to see, we have plenty of wiggle room to put an improved team on the field. If we don't address the FRONT 3, and get a FS -- that won't be Cousins fault.
If you look at what we have on defense, and at RB -- I think MANY would say we overachieved.
