I haven't seen Inside Out yet but Zootopia, Cars 2 and the Good Dinosaur all sucked.

Thats a good article, by the way. I hadn't figured that Walt Disney's personal bias actually went into issues with parents in childrens movies. I just assumed they moved the parents out of the way so the younger characters could develop. Kids spend so much time in the background that Disney movies provide an escape where they are the ones in charge.

Zootopia was odd, to say the least. There was some humor in it, but it had some weird racial undertones that made it almost uncomfortable, IMO. I haven't seen Cars 2 and prolly won't. The Good Dino sucked, I agree.

Inside Out is worth a watch. If you got a little girl, it'll punch ya in the feels, fosho.

Inside Out looks good but I haven't had the time to be in that kind of mood. I suspect that it will be like 'Up' where its a movie that you show your kids when they get a little older.

I'm sure there are about 30 kids movies I'd push on my kids if/when I have them and Pixar has like 10 of them. Movies like Zootopia are too messy and they gloss over the parts where the character actually overcomes issues, comes of age, has difficulty, etc., and way too busy trying to show how complex a world can be without actually getting involved with said world. Something like The Incredibles, which basically has the exact opposite controversial message, is a much easier sell because of how it shows family working together and growing.

I know the preachiness/message of Zootopia, the whole intent of the movie, will turn some off, but I still gave it a 9/10, even disagreeing with it because the execution was so good. The DMV scene had me cracking up.

I generally like their movies, but you may be right. However, I actually think Inside Out may have been the best movie of 2015. It was brilliant. Finding Dory was worth the price of admission, had plenty of laughs and a good story, I just noticed that Disney (even before Pixar) seems a little obsessed with the absent parents story arc.

I just googled it. I guess they claim Walt did it originally as homage/guilt about his own Mom, but the majority of their films fall into this category.

Why are so many Disney parents missing or dead?

Kinda weird and is actually traumatic shit for children's movies, IMO.

Because it's a universal human fear?

Right. But these are movies supposedly geared towards children. Should fear be the driving point? It'd be one thing if it were a movie here, or a movie there, but it almost all of them? I get it, and by no means am I a helicopter-parent regarding stuff like that, but I just find it kind of weird.

My daughter was the one who made me go 'oh okay, I get it now' about what 'mild peril' was all about. She'd lose her mind if anyone was in danger in a show. I got her past it by talking to her about how ANY story, from the simplest kid's story to Shakespeare all share one universal trait, which is conflict.

IMO, Disney uses that one all the time, because they make kid's movies, and the most profitable ones are kids movies where parents can watch on their own level too. So in the examples you cite, the kids worry about losing their parents, and the parents worry about what would happen to their kids if they were ever gone.

Disney profits, wash-rinse-repeat.

But if you go back further in history, and read Grimm's fairy tales forinstance, they're pretty macabre.

The preachiness of the movie is kind of offensive, though.

Predators are very clearly black males and Prey are very clearly white females. The only prey that fall out of that category that I can remember were the rodents who were apparently the mafia, the rabbits who were backwards rural redneck cowards and the nudists with their 'alternative lifestyle' so take that how you will.

Hopps being made into a meter maid by a police chief only to have the police chief be proven wrong and disgraced in a very short period of time. No sense of actual chain of command or pride in community. Just Hopps vs the World because no one believes in her.

I did get about a dozen good laughs in there but the whole plot is just random events followed by a clue continuing the plot like clockwork. I feel like the average episode of Law and Order is 100x more compelling outside of the jokes.

Here's what I posted on the imdb message board right after I saw the movie:

This movie sets up some strawman arguments, especially about the bunny not being able to be a cop. Who, in 2016 America, actually says "Oh, you can't be this because you're female/minority/gay, etc."? I don't hang around a liberal crowd and I can't even recall anyone going on in such away. This isn't much of an issue today.

OK, now on to the "black" thing. This wasn't just about "not being judgmental". This movie went MUCH deeper than that. It was stating that the behavior/actions of the "predators" is no really different than anyone else. (Uh...the stats beg to differ.) Then we find out it was the drugs that made them do this. So, if they were acting as predators, it was because of something they have no control over. Or to take it a few steps further, WE made them that way. That is highly debatable at best, and very wrong at worst. And as for the point "not all black people are bad" - no *beep* Hell, even official white supremacists acknowledge this. Another strawman argument.

As if the questionable, cliche "feel good" points it was trying to make weren't a little annoying, it constantly beats you over the head with it, to the point it actually became annoying.

With that being said, I can look past a movie's message, even if I find it questionable, so I gave the movie a 9/10 due to cleverness, humor, and being well-thought-out. The delivery system for the message was the star of the movie for me, rather than the message itself.

Just watched Major League. Still hilarious after numerous viewings. Definitely up there as one of my all time favorite sports movies.

Scorch Trials

Why do I waste my time with this YA garbage? Maze Runner was alright. Not great. Barely memorable. But alright. This was painful. The whole thing was just a series of last second escapes and dues ex machina.

And zombies. Fast zombies at that.

The only good thing about it was Barry Pepper. Why doesn't he get more work?

2/10

Interesting. I don't spend a lot of time analyzing movies but zootopia rubbed me the wrong way. Apparently the predators were supposed to have shock collars but they took that out early on in the process of making the movie.

I just saw Lilo and Stitch for the first time. Much better movie. More Disney parent cliches but I didn't feel like a bunch of media types were trying to create strawman issues as you say.

They botched the transition from book to movie so bad it isn't even funny. They massacred that book.

Winter's Bone- I don't know why I expect independent films to be enjoyable before watching. This is such a dull, sad, depressing movie. Nothing about it was enjoyable.

Watched The Collapsed. Sounded like it might be a good post-Apocalypse movie but it was HORRIBLE. Terrible acting + a slow build to action sequences is just not a good recipe. Zero stars.

I can't remember. It was Sunday. How long ago was that? Yesterday? I can't remember the name of it, or what it was about, but it was pretty good.

Reign Over Me...watched it due to reading about it here...I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan, but this was an awesome movie. Probably his best dramatic, if not his only dramatic role. Him and Don Cheadle's interaction was perfect......

Watch Spanglish. Sadler is actually a decent actor when he wants to be.

I have also heard great things about Punch Drunk Love, but I actually have never seen it.

I liked Winters Bone but it's certainly isn't high octane or action packed.
