Maybe the Rangers figure they can provide their own #3, #4, and #5 starting pitchers from within their system, by the time they can get to a World Series. That might mean only spending significant money on guys who can slot in at #1 or #2. Below those slots they may only want a bridge guy who is cheap.

If they bring back Perez for 3, theres a decent chance that third year sees them making a legit run.

I was thinking you might think this. I guess we will see if the money here is a Mets fluke or a true sign the price has gone up. Inflation

I mean, the Rangers outspent everyone last year. They seem to understand where the market is.

I think the Rangers had to overspend on Seager and Marcus because we so no competitive

But unless Perez agent overshot the offer it looks like in retrospect he should have already been locked up. And yes I think he is a competent game 3 starter in a WS. Those are not that easy to come by or develop

Also from Adam:

The Rangers will have to make a move to clear at least one spot on the 40 man roster by Thursday, when players have to be removed from the 60 day injured list — the Rangers would have 41 players once everyone from the 60 day i.l. is restored. The Rangers also have until Thursday to make decisions on their 2023 contract options for Jose Leclerc ($6.25M with a $500K buyout) and Kole Calhoun ($5.5M with no buyout). Calhoun is almost certainly going to have his option declined, which, even in the absence of any other move, would get the Rangers’ 40 man roster down to 40.
The way Santana looked early makes me wonder if losing him would be a mistake. he was way overused especially in high leverage situations early. The pen was as a whole
I guess people have to be on top of this

I meant they may not want to be paying that much for a #3 since they have several pitchers in the organization who project to be that good or better. Now if they see Perez as a #2 or a #1, like I do, then they should have no problem paying him.

Right. But according to your timetable - which I agree with - the in house options won't be ready until Perez' 3 year would be up. I'd like Perez to anchor the rotation while the homegrown SPs develop and arrive. When his contract is up (alongside Gray), they can be replaced with them.

I would rather try to replace him than one of our prospects who might be lost to Rule 5. Of course, I think we need to sign 2 free agent relievers so I would naturally see less of a need for some of our 2022 relievers.

Here is the top part of my timetable.

Kent - mid 2023
White - mid 2023
Bradford - late 2023
Winn - late 2023
Garcia - early 2024
Leiter - mid 2024

All of these guys, according to my estimation will be here well before Opening Day 2025.

They aren't going to arrive ready to be postseason pitchers.

I was referring to your timeline of 2025 being the first year of true World Series competitiveness.

By the way, we are not going to be a WS team in 2023. Most likely not in 2024, but certainly not in 2023.

This is the post I was referring to.

When I said "ready," I meant ready to play in the postseason. Should have been more clear.

The guys arriving in 2023 should be ready to pitch by then. Most likely the one arriving in 2024 as well.

Then there is Otto, Dunning and Ragans as well. And Gray.

If we get fortunate with many of pitching prospects becoming starters then Otto may become a force in the pen on a WS team

Well sure we will be putting a pencil to this soon. Who do you think will be ready to jump into a relief roll this coming season? Lee? Who else?

I fully expect White, Leiter and Gray to be able to make up a very formidable 3, 4, and a 5 in a postseason rotation by the end of 2024.

There are also more than a half dozen other guys in our organization who could very easily replace one of those other 3 should they need to by then.

Your #5 isn't even in the postseason rotation anyway.

I am not sure if anyone will in 2023. Maybe Lee, but who knows. Wolfram is in the AFL so maybe he will. I really, really wish they would sign two relievers.

Which is why Santana might be an option if we can get the earlier version. We can’t just open up roster spots to rule 5 eligible guys without a few of them being able to pitch on the MLB club immediately

They both could be every bit as good as Matt Harrison who was part of our postseason rotation.

I don't expect them to be for a different reason. I think we have too many guys that will pass them over the next 6 to 18 months. One of them could be in 2023 I guess.

But even if they never amount to anything, we have plenty of other candidates to fill out a rotation's last 3 spots by the time we have a chance at a WS.
